Hi,

I've got a seagate tape drive (IDE) and i'm trying to build support for it into my kernel [2.6.15].

How do i check my devices to see which one and if it;s there. My BIOS is complaining a little so it might not be.

Thanks!

lshw is a great little util for listing all the hardware in your system. It's a little overkill for your needs, but hey, nice to have an all in one solution right? You can pretty much ignore what the bios says about the device. Linux will probably be able to initialize it on it's own quite happily.

I used to think that if the BIOS doesn't see it then it's not accessible to the operating system. But now i know better! Cheers.

actually i found it like this:

Code:
dmesg | grep ^hd[a-h]

this was from an article here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-411995-highlight-mtst.html

i'm trying to avoid overkill. my server doesn't even have a mouse.

thanks for your help

well, lshw isn't exactly overkill on any system. My server (also sans mouse) has it installed and I use it to help debug why stuff isn't working on the hardware side.
