|
|
I am the proud new owner of a used SGI Indy workstation, and am desperately trying to make it run Gentoo Linux.
I have been able to netboot the thing, but it looks like it can't affect a device to my scsi hard disk.
Here is my dmesg :

At this point, I run net-setup to configure eth0 and am able to telnet into the box (the SGI monitor I have is in such a bad shape I can't read anything on it).
Running "fdisk /dev/sda" (or sd{bcd} for that matter) only gives me an "Unable to open /dev/sda" error message.
I know the scsi disk is ok (it's detected in the dmesg, and still has remains of IRIX on it since the workstation still boots IRIX by default). Could someone help me correct the problem so I can partition my hard drive and proceed to installation ?

Just tried to boot using a Debian TFTP img. Works like a charm.
Looks like the gentoo mips img is broken somehow. |

Have you tried other netboot images? Such as http://dev.gentoo.org/~kumba/mips/netboot/testing/ip22-r4k-20060112.img.bz2
Regardless of the state of the HDD... one thing is certain, it is too small to do much useful. I've managed to cram Gentoo onto a 2GB HDD, but it was a tight squeeze. I find at least 8GB is preferrable. _________________ Stuart Longland (a.k.a Redhatter, VK4MSL)

Just tried 20050128 : this one boots, and recognizes my harddrive at sda.
Once the boot is finished, I get the prompt telling me to hit enter to activate this console.
But the keyboard seems not to be operationnal, and I'm stuck here.
This is getting ridiculous. |

Heh, indeed. Have you tried using serial console rather than the monitor/keyboard? _________________ Stuart Longland (a.k.a Redhatter, VK4MSL)

No : I don't have the special serial cable. Anyway, using this old netboot image is probably not an option since it will probably be more buggy than recent ones.
I'm still stuck with the following problems :
- 20050530 (current "stable" mips image) will not create an sda device for my harddrive (the drive is in /sys, though)
- 20060112 (current experimental image) will not boot at all. Looks like the image is somehow broken or too large ? ("text start 0x8002000, size 0x7b0020 doesn't fit in a freememory area" when the boot prom finds the netboot image) |
