|
|
I've reinstalled Gentoo (1.4rc3) several different times for different reasons (all from stage 1). Ive had this same problem in all installs: When logging out to switch users or to shut down/restart, 9 out of 10 times something hangs....well not actually hangs....but instead of going to the kdm log in screen or restarting, the screen just goes black and nothing happens. The light on the monitor at this point goes from being on to flashing ( basically that is the same as what it does when the monitor is on but not the computer). It's not that it goes out of sync...because the monitor displays a warning when this happens. And its not that it goes into sleep mode because the light changes to orange for that....its more like X loses connection to the monitor at this point. Its very annoying because either way I have to do a hard shutdown/restart....not good. I have no other problems with X...loggin is fine...startup is fine....I have no unusually strange configs....and the system was not compiled overly aggressive (CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"). Like I said....everything else works as expected...this is very frustrating. Currently I only have KDE installed & using the Pfeifer_Pre1-r1 kernel....but I've tried no less than 6 different ones....with nothing exotic compiled in or as modules. Every once in a while it works as expected but mostly it doesn't...I can't figure out why it would work one time.....then not the next 10 or more times. I'm not sure , in fact, if it is KDE or X itself. KDE version is 3.1.1....but did the same with 3.1.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated....and if more info is needed, let me know. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok I was having exactly the same problem on my system, the problem occurs only when DRI is activated. I guess there must be somme kind of deadlock on ressources after the first login, my guess would be that the first session doesn't free the video card completly and the second waits for it. This would completly lock my system. The same problems occurs with any DM.
I am investigating to find a way to use both DRI and a DM, but right now I would say you have to choose one.

I also have the same problem...
My system is an Athlon XP 2000+, with 512MB DDR and Kyro II graphics card.
Everything works fine except when logging out from any desktop manager... the screen turns black and there's no way to login again (neither text mode) .
Any ideas?
Thanks!... |

I have the same problem. This is with the nvidia driver and kde 3.1.4. It seems like I had a patch on a much earlier version of KDE with the same problem. Perhaps the problem needs to be fed back to the KDE developers. |
