I have been fiddling with my wireless for two days now and can't connect to essid here is what I get
Code: | /etc/init.d/net.eth1 start
* Starting eth1
* Configuring wireless network for eth1
* Trying to force preferred in case they are hidden
Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A) :
invalid argument "enc".
* eth1 does not support setting keys
* or the parameter "mac_key_renas" or "key_renas" is incorrect
* Failed to associate with any preferred access points on eth1
* Failed to configure wireless for eth1 |
here is my config file
Code: | config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
dhcp_eth0="nodns nontp nonis"
modules=( "iwconfig" )
essid_eth1="any"
key_renas="s:************************** enc open"
preferred_aps=( "renas" )

Hey!
Same problem here!
I can not use dhcp with the bcm43xx driver.
I think thats a driver problem, but i'm not sure.

rojanu:
Are you sure that eth1 is your wireless card? Please try setting it up manually first, just so you can ensure that the driver and card are working properly first. What kind of wireless card do you have?
KeyserZero:
That's really not the same problem as rojanu, he isn't even associating. Make sure that the AP's MAC address is set or try forcing it with iwconfig even if it's already there. This is the usual cause of DHCP not working with bcm43xx. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

JoseJX - I am having an issue with getting my AP to give me a dhcp address also. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-437721.html How do you set the AP's MAC with iwconfig?
On a side note Thanks for all your help in the forums regarding how to configure the airport2 card in Linux, it has been a lifesaver.

Awesome, thanks that got me connected here at work. I am sure that is my problem at home too.
Any ideas why I would need to set the AP's MAC when using wpa but I didn't have to do using iwconfig to connect to an Open wireless point?
Either way thanks so much

It's probably not getting set somewhere in the stack, but I can't really tell you where (or it would be fixed) :) If you find it, please let us know. _________________ Gentoo PPC FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml |

iwconfig gives me eth1, then it should be eth1 or am I wrong
I really don't know how to set it up manually, can you direct me to a how to or something similar _________________ "Any fool can write code that a computer can understand. Good programmers write code that humans can understand." --- Martin Fowler,

I get the exact same thing on my Linksys WRT54G 2.2 router using the latest firmware (4.3 something). I cannot get it talking. My Airport2 card sees it but cannot connect. I have tried setting the IP, SSID, MAC, route and such manually but I still can't talk to anything.
We have multiple AP's around my building at work and I was able to get my Airport2 card talking to them by setting the AP's MAC but this did not work at home and since I can't get my ibook to even manually set the ip and talk to the router something else has to be gumming up the works.
I am beginning to think that it something in the way the Linksys router communicates to it's clients. Anyone have any ideas how I could determine what my Airport is doing communication wise. I am guessing I can't really setup a sniffer to capture packets cause technically it hasn't associated itself on a network. |

I have tried the devicecap version, but i don't know how to setup the wireless card for devicecap!
Can you tell me the necessary steps?
Thanks

JoseJX wrote: | The instructions for devicescape are in the sticky post at the top of this forum. | This very good note is for bcm43xx-dscape version 2006-01-25.
There are modifications in the latest version.
If you want try latest version, see also here
Note :
1) The only disavantage of dscape version is patching kernel.
2) Now it doesn't need to patch wpa_supplicant, it uses the standard wext driver (option -Dwext) of wpa_supplicant.
3) The sta_up script has changed now, see here
4) I use dhcp and run commands from this script directly :
- patch, compile and install the kernel. (I made a patch for 2.6.16-rc5, it works for me ).
- configure /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
- modprobe bcm43xx-d80211
- Run Code: | echo -n "sta0" > /sys/class/ieee80211/phy0/add_iface
ifconfig wlan0.11 up
ifconfig sta0 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
wpa_supplicant -Bw -Dwext -ista0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf | before bringing inteface sta0 up.

Has any one got an idea what I might have missed or did wrong. Laptop can senn the AP but cannot get an IP address, probably something got to do with WEP key because,
if I take out the WEP key I can connect but then the connection drops again. ( That might have something to do with the power saving settings but haven't had the time to look at them yet, trying solve other things first) _________________ "Any fool can write code that a computer can understand. Thanks bz31 and JoseJX. I finally got some free time and got my vanilla kernel up and running with the all-in-one driver. If I am reading this correctly I do not need the fwcutter or anything else because this has ieee and broadcom 43xx driver.
I am a little confused with your script and don't see the script the git wireless blob page mentions.
After I configure my wpa_supplicant.
I run the following Code: | echo -n "sta0" > /sys/class/ieee80211/phy0/add_iface
ifconfig wlan0.11 up
ifconfig sta0 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
wpa_supplicant -Bw -Dwext -ista0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf |
What is sta0? An alias to wlan0.11? Why do I need to set the MAC? Should my conf.d/net read
Code: | config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
dhcp_eth0="nodns nontp nonis"
config_sta0=( "dhcp" )
dhcp_sta0="nodns nontp nonis"
modules=( "wpa_supplicant" )
wpa_supplicant_sta0="-Dwext"
wpa_timeout_sta0=60 |
was I suppose to not specify the driver in the conf.d/net? Is it suppose to be Dwext or Dbcm43xx?
After I have my net and wpa_supplicant correct should I be able to get a dhcp address if I do dhcpd sta0?
Thanks and sorry for all the questions,
Nick |

- You need fwcutter to extract firmware. But you don't need softmac if you use dscape. So if someone has problem with softmac, maybe dscape version of driver bcm43xx is a solution.
- The commands I use before bringing sta0 up are taken from the script bcm43xx-d80211-sta_up.sh which is in the directory scripts. Maybe this script from patch "all-in-one for rc4" is not the last version.
- I don't know why there are wlan0, wlan0ap, wlan0.11 and sta0.
- use option -Dwext for wpa_supplicant.
- dhcp works for me. |
