Seems like MANY postings are getting the same error (see

I was WORKING under Gentoo 2005.1 default portage. But these version of the driver/Kismet duo were not 'Next-Generation.' To get working with Next Generation, BOTH of the Kismet and madwifi-drivers needs to be bleeding edge.

I had GENTOO 2005.1 default
Kismet 2005.08.01
net-wireless/madwifi-driver-0.1443.20060207

which was unworkable.

So, the KISMET wasn't Next Generation and its next generation Kismet is STILL not in portage... so, it was time to go out and get KISMET out of band.
Code:
svn co http://svn.kismetwireless.net/code/trunk kismet-devel

Also,
Code:
wlanconfig

is now the choice of utility (over iwconfig).

Even with SVN CO, the same error persist....

I solved that argument list error by using the stable-devel svn checkout of kismet. the current stable kismet code in portage doesn't support madwifi-ng. Maybe brix will update kismet in portage with a new ~arch ebuild for us kismet madwifi-ng folk.
