Hi guys,

I have gnome emerged and fully working, I emerged samba and have managed to be able to mount my c share from the command line and then via fstab just fine, it can then be browsed from the file manager.

But I cannot connect using the Places browser...

can anyone explain what I have missed?

Will

If you installed samba after GNOME then there is no support in GNOME for samba. Try adding samba to USE in /etc/make.conf and run:

Code:
emerge world --newuse -pv

to check which packages that need to be rebuilt for samba support to work. For GNOME to use samba you have to at least build gnome-vfs with the samba use flag.

Thank you that makes perfect sense. Here is the output from that command:

Code:

Geko linux-2.6.15-gentoo-r1 # emerge world --newuse -pv
>>> --newuse implies --update... adding --update to options.

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/man-pages-2.23 [2.22] +nls 1,708 kB
[ebuild     U ] sys-libs/cracklib-2.8.5-r1 [2.8.5] +nls +python 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r1  -build -doc -symlink* (-ultra1) 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] app-arch/tar-1.15.1  -build +bzip2* +nls -static 1,573 kB
[ebuild     U ] sys-devel/flex-2.5.33-r1 [2.5.4a-r6] +nls -static 679 kB
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/arts-3.4.3  +alsa +arts -artswrappersuid -debug +esd* -hardened -jack -kdeenablefinal +mp3 -nas +vorbis -xinerama 0 kB

[ebuild   R   ] www-client/links-2.1_pre20  +X -directfb -fbcon +gpm -javascript +jpeg -livecd +png +sdl +ssl -svga +tiff* -unicode 0 kB

Can't see that this is exactly helping...

This is what I did to make.conf

Code:

Geko linux-2.6.15-gentoo-r1 # cat /etc/make.conf
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically built this stage
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example
CFLAGS="-Os -march=pentium4 -pipe"
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"
GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.swin.edu.au/gentoo http://gentoo.gg3.net/"
USE="samba"

and my USE is defined in /etc/make.profile thus:

Code:
Geko make.profile # cat make.defaults
# Copyright 1999-2005 Gentoo Foundation
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2
# $Header: /var/cvsroot/gentoo-x86/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.1/make.defaults,v 1.5 2005/11/16 17:00:36 wolf31o2 Exp $

USE="alsa apm arts avi bitmap-fonts cups eds emboss encode fortran foomaticdb gdbm gif gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 imlib jpeg kde libg++ libwww mad mikmod motif mp3 mpeg ogg oggvorbis opengl oss pdflib png qt quicktime sdl spell truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts vorbis X xml2 xmms xv"

If I add --deep to the update emerge I get:

Code:

Geko make.profile # emerge world --deep --newuse -pv
>>> --newuse implies --update... adding --update to options.

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

that was just a thought.

Looks like some of that might help me with my sound probs so I will get that update happening now anyway!

What do you suggest now?

I would go with the second one (--deep) if you are satisfied with the use flag changes (the ones marked with *). Otherwise you could simply select the ones from the --deep-list, like gnome-vfs for GNOME samba support (and maybe gnome-system-tools if you want to make samba shares), and re-emerge them manually if you don't want to rebuild them all right now.

Thanks - this is making some kind of sense to me - but i am still a little overwhealmed - however, I did the full --deep emerge world and SAMBA now works fine in GNOME - so... YAY and thanks heaps! Sound is still a problem but I am hunting that with AgentJDH.

Good :)

You should read a bit in the Gentoo handbook about this, it will probably make a lot more sense to you.

Believe me I am reading and researching very widely, and I want to compliment the Gentoo community for the quality of the FAQs, the Handbook (which for a document that claims not to be maintained is of an astonishing quality), the Wiki and these forums. Thank you for your insight and encouragement it is truly appreciated.
