I have not looked at ATi cards in linux for over a year now, I was wondering, If I buy a laptop with an ATi card, how good or bad are the drivers for linux nowdays? Have they reached a similar level to nvidia drivers in terms of ease of install and 3d performance? |

well, right now i'm using ati-drivers-8.22.5, and they're working quite well,
i get aroung 5000 fps with "glxgears", and i'm running doom3 with my radeon 9600XT,
the only problem is that sometimes the kernel halts when shuting down the X server |

well, I'm using the latest ~amd64, and they are superb!
before I had quite a hard time installing the drivers, furthermore I had the same problems with exiting X, now, however, no problems have appeared.
Plus, Since my update, I gained over 1k in glxgears, thus having around 8.5k |

So, do you just run the setup script, change your XConfig and they work? |
