Hi,
I recently got a SGI O2 (IP32, 180Mhz R5000) off a friend. It currently has Irix 6.5 on it. I don't have the password for the root account (or any accounts) and I wish to see what is on it before I put Gentoo on it.
I've made a LiveCD so i can mount the hdd and reset the root password. It loads fine, except when i try and mount any of the partitions, i get this
livecd dev # mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/gentoo/
mount: Function not implemented
any idea what this means?
heres a little more info if it helps
livecd dev # fdisk /dev/sda
Command (m for help): p
Disk /dev/sda (SGI disk label): 67 heads, 62 sectors, 1010 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 4154 * 512 bytes
----- partitions -----
Pt# Device Info Start End Sectors Id System

9: /dev/sda3 0 0 3125 0 SGI volhdr
11: /dev/sda4 0 1010 4197405 6 SGI volume

I hate to tell you this... but XFS is horribly broken on Linux/MIPS (which is ironic, I know). So it doesn't suprise me at all that you can't mount the XFS partition.
Two options exist:
- Pull the HDD out, plug it into an x86 box, and enable support for SGI disk partitions... then try mounting the XFS partition there.
- Mount a remote directory via NFS with plenty of space, and use dd to suck the data off /dev/sda1. Then mount the file you copied on the other machine as a loopback device.
Even then... Linux XFS is still quite different to SGI XFS, and so you'll still have lots of fun mounting this partition. _________________ Stuart Longland (a.k.a Redhatter, VK4MSL)

Thanks for your reply. I gave the second option a go, but got errors when mounting the image. I figure its got something with what you already mentioned about Linux XFS being different from SGI XFS. I've given up on it for now and have been installing gentoo on it, but I have as a result learn some neat stuff. My friend has another o2, so maybe later I can give it another go.
Thanks again.
