When I run modules-update or on a system restart I'm getting this: gentoo ~ # modules-update * Warning: could not generate /etc/modprobe.conf! What seems to be causing this? THANKS

file permissions?

[EDIT]nope, I have the problem myself
file permissions seem OK

in my case there is indeed a kernel mismatch: Gentoo 2.6.14 chrooted in a Debian 2.6.7
