|
|
I'm in the process of trying fluxbox, but there is one thing that scares me. How is the handling of USB removable media done under fluxbox? In the past I've used udev and edited my fstab, but I didn't like that because every time you've added a new device (USB-stick from a friend) you had to create a new fstab entry. If using udev rules, I had to edit them in order to macht the ID of the USB device vendor. I didn't like that.
With KDE I like the way it is handled for me automatically. How will that be with fluxbox? Will I have to go back to fstab? Any workarounds? Ideas? Thanks

whats so scary about using udev ?
I currently have no automounting thing, only one rule in /etc/fstab to mount one usb stick at a time.
plug it in, /dev/sda is added, and a simple mount /mnt/usb will do _________________ Programming today is a race between Software Engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof Programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots.

Udev with one entry in fstab might work, but can easily breal. You puts a USB stick. Then another USB stick. Now you need to reedit the fstab for the new device. If you are root you can mount, but not everyone using my machine can su. Another problem is that if you plug in the devices in different order (ipod, then USB stick, then camera, or backwards), they get different sdX identifier for each device. That's bad, because you have to reconfigre gtkpod, digicam, etc. I know with udev rules you can force the identifiers, but then you need to do a new udev rule for each device. So udev/fstab is not what I'd like.
I'd like:
- easy mounting. A mount command at most.
- Devices always get same /dev/sdX identifier, regardless of plug order.
- new devices don't require any modifications to fstab, udev rules, or the like
- as long as the user is part of usb group, no root access is required (no sudo either).
I'm not familar with gnome. I use hal/dbus/pmount under KDE and does what I like. Would this work with fluxbox? Or how do you guys do it? Any wiki/howto/link would be great! |
