|
|
I have a W2K laptop that is member of my companies domain. (So in it's
System properties -> Network Identification the Workgroup is disabled,
and the domain is set instead.)
But on my Gentoo pc, I have to set the workgroup parameter in the smb.conf,
so I tried to set it to the domain of my W2K laptop. Now I expect to find something
in the W2K explorer, under my network places. But there is nothing.
Questions:
1. How can I check in on my W2K laptop, that I have access to my Gentoo pc
via Samba?
2. Is it possible to have a W2K client that is in a domain, not a workgroup? _________________ PII-MMX-350, 256MB; eth0: 2Mbit flat via 3c59x module; Kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r6; X+Icewm |

Just don't, it's something with the way elections, and domains work, this will make windows sharing stop working on your lan.

Put your samba machine in any workgroup/domain you want. Just open up network places or my computer and explicitly specify \\samba-hostname\
It would probably make your like easier if you choose SHARE level security in samba. |

OK, I meditated so much about your wise answer, but I didn't get it. I even don't know
what 'SHARE level security' means. I just wanted to access files on my gentoo box,
from my win2k laptop, and I thought setting up gentoo and a DSL internet connection
makes me able to manage this.
It turned out to be even worse: the two comuters can't ping each other!
I'm using a FritzBox 7050 WLAN, my to computers are connected to it
(and thus both have a DSL internet connection):
1. Gentoo box: eth0, inet addr:192.168.178.20, name: pc
2. W2K Laptop: WLAN, IP 192.168.178.24, name: bln-thne1lapw2
As I said, a ping is not possible. So, maybe I should solve this problem
first, create another thread on this? Sorry, I even don't know which information
I should provide.
*edit*: I run Firestarter as my firewall. Maybe this is a prob? _________________ PII-MMX-350, 256MB; eth0: 2Mbit flat via 3c59x module; Kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r6; X+Icewm |
