Hola,

I've been using kubuntu and many other linux dists for years but then I stopped..
A friend told me that I had to try gentoo. The installation was harsh yet rewarding.
My question is that i am missing a few things such as nslookup/telnet and others
like dig.

Is there something that I missed? Also are there any commands that I must know
about to survive in gentoo?

Thanks for your help!

dig is part of net-dns/bind-tools, so do
Code:
# emerge -av net-dns/bind-tools

Similarly, telnet client/server can be emerged
Code:
# emerge -av net-misc/netkit-telnetd

Edit -- fixed typo

Thanks for your help.

Btw I have many installed items to run in /etc/init.d/
but on a reboot they do not start. Any of them.
Got any ideas?

Don't use etc-update. Use something like dispatch-conf, otherwise people tend to srew up their conf files....

hmmm.... don't see anything about updating configs. ;-)

the problems is about running services / init-scripts

and ... though dispatch-conf is indeed nice and intended to be more safe than etc-update it still ain't part of the standard gentoo installation

anyway here is some starting point for dispatch-conf

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=184107

(as i think about this one, i recall that dispatch-conf once hosed my updated conf files, something i didn't run into while using etc-update ;-) )

On my system dispatch-conf is part of portage (the program), I assume it is the same with yours

whooo.....

apparently i didn't use it too long ;-) (thought it was part of gentoolkit)

is the "config-archive" directory also included nowadays? (-> to use it out of the box)

seems like it's just lacking the option to list all config-changes and to auto-update them after merging relevant files manually.
