qt apps do work. even without crash, but i'm getting a lot of those:
Code:

X Error: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) 1
 Major opcode: 154
 Minor opcode: 23
 Resource id: 0x1cx027ff

looks familiar? YES!

I'm seeing the same problem. I've tried recompiling gnome-libs and pango, but no change.

i just played around with the kde control center and the fonts. now Terminal doesn't work any more.

update: it definitly got something to do with fonts/themes. i just reconfigured the gtk-theme settings in the kde control center and Terminal works again.

I get the same problem.
Code:

The program 'gedit' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 608 error_code 1 request_code 154 minor_code 2)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I also get:
Code:

Could not init font path element /usr/lib/X11/fonts/local, removing from list!

That directory exists, but it doesn't contain any fonts.

now i'm testing this solution...
Code:
  Copy compositeproto and fixesproto into your overlay. Move the compositeproto
 ebuild to 0.2.2 and fixesproto to 3.0.2. Remerge both of them, and remerge
 libXcomposite, libXfixes, and xorg-server.

I'd like trying myself too ... but i dont know exactly how to do that. I copied compositeproto and fixesproto to an overlay; but how should i "move" them to another version ? Could somebody explain the procedure a little bit ?

Thx

Just mv them to another version and generate digest
Code:
mv fixesproto-4.0.ebuild fixesproto-3.0.2.ebuild
ebuild fixesproto-3.0.2.ebuild digest

BTW All thanks for Donnie :)

hey there. got one more bug over here.
installed modular xorg without problems. but runs only with the nv drivers. when trying to run xorg with nvidia drivers system hangs so i always need to reboot.
tried different kernel and nvidia driver versions, but nothing helps
xlog doesn't shows any errors. in fact it seems to load fine there, but screen keeps black.
tried disabling framebuffer options in the kernel (read about this somewhere on the forums) but no change
there are no special nvidia options in xorg.conf
enabling/disabling dbe, glx, dri also didn't help

any idea ?

my specs: athlon xp, gf mx4, kernel 2.6.15, nvidia 8178, xorg7

@ tom

I'm not all too sure but I think that was what i got when my nvidia device nodes were missing. That seems to happpen every now and then. The installtion of the nvidiadrivers should create them but doesn't in some cases. If that's the case the following script should fix it. save it as a file chmod+x it and execute it.

Code:

#!/bin/sh
error() {
   echo "$(basename $0): fatal error, $1 failed"
   exit 1
   }
if [ ! -c /dev/.devfsd ]; then
   for i in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7; do
      node="/dev/nvidia$i"
      rm -f $node
      mknod $node c 195 $i || error "mknod \"$node\""
      chmod 0666 $node     || error "chmod \"$node\""
   done
   node="/dev/nvidiactl"
   rm -f $node
   mknod $node c 195 255    || error "mknod \"$node\""
   chmod 0666 $node         || error "chmod \"$node\""
fi
if [ -d /etc/udev/devices ]; then
   for i in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7; do
      node="/etc/udev/devices/nvidia$i"
      rm -f $node
      mknod $node c 195 $i || error "mknod \"$node\""
      chmod 0666 $node     || error "chmod \"$node\""
   done
   node="/etc/udev/devices/nvidiactl"
   rm -f $node
   mknod $node c 195 255    || error "mknod \"$node\""
   chmod 0666 $node         || error "chmod \"$node\""
fi
exit 0

I've emerged xorg 7, I use nvidia driver and kde 3.5.1.

When I startx, i get no virtual desktops (just the main desktop) - cannot reconfigure this, it always goes back to one.

knotes starts near the middle of the desktop, it is not placed in systray

windows do not have title bars

windows cannot be moved (using the alt key plus mouse button does not work)

other sucky things like this konqueror window totally hung for a while when i was typing this

??

Thanks for any assistance.

Chris

xorg-server 1.0.2-r1 is now in portage which fixes the gtk-problems.

Donnie Berkholz to gentoo-dev wrote:
Hi all,

One big issue has come up with modular X, which is now fixed in
xorg-server 1.0.2-r1. The problem is that upstream released new versions
of a couple of extensions (composite and xfixes), but didn't release an
xorg-server including the updated knowledge of these extensions. The
code for this is in upstream CVS, however, so I've pulled it and added
it to our xorg-server ebuild. Since the composite library lacks any
version checking, this results in failures, primarily on GTK2 apps, with
BadRequests error messages.

In summary, if you just installed modular X and your apps are crashing
with BadRequests, emerge xorg-server 1.0.2-r1.

Thanks,
Donnie
