|
|
Two questions on a new install with modular X, using the 2006 minimal-install CD (/etc/make.profile -> ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.0) to get up and running:
First question: as I plan on using kde exclusively, and would like avoid updating gnome packages that I never use, does anyone seem any problems with just having -gnome as a USE flag, or does this mean trouble down the road?
Second question: Although my fstab includes a valid entry for the cdrom device Code: | /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto noauto, user,ro 0 0 | and the device is detected on boot Code: | Probing IDE interface ide1...
hdc: ASUS DRW-1608P2S, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15 | but oddly /dev/hdc is not created on boot. Shouldn't this have been handled by udev? I know, it's trivial to create the node manually, but I thought this was supposed to happen automatically ...
Thanks! |

No problem with -gnome. You might want to consider adding -gtk and -gtk2 too.
No idea about your second problem though. Maybe check your udev configuration?
Or could this be a hotplug/coldplug thing?
(Yes, udev should be creating those nodes automatically) |

it IS supposed to be created automatically by udev... I remember having a problem like that, but I can't remember how I fixed it; there should be lots of info on that on the forums.
well, the really easy way to work around this, of course, would be running "MAKEDEV hdc" in the local startup script... _________________ "Confident, lazy, cocky, dead." -- Felix Jongleur, Otherland

Thanks, mseigneurin, for the speedy reply. Hotplug is loaded in the default runlevel, and coldplug at boot. Will check udev config, although it seems that for a device configuration as generic as this, dev nodes should populate successfully at boot (as they did in my previous 2005 setup using the same kernel .config), and I am The Compleat Noob where udev tweaking is concerned. |
