hi there
im having some slow boots after i upgraded my kernel from 2.6.12, before, all the boot process to the login took about 25-30secs, but i have tried the gentoo sources 2.6.15 and the suspend2 sources 2.6.14 and 2.6.15 (currently using this one for the hibernate feature) with the same bad results, it tooks like 50-60 secs just to get over the initial boot process, after that it goes smooth loading the modules and services that tooks like 8-10 more seconds, boosting the overall time at 70secs, just too much
i notice that the boot process stops some seconds on things like iptables and ip_contrack, but my question is why that doesnt happen on my old kernel 2.6.12? and what can i do about it?
my machine is an inspiron 6000 laptop |

So, if I understand correctly, the problem occurs when the kernel hasn't finished loading (before starting the standard sysvinit process)?
I'd play around with some kernel versions, as that probably has to do with some patch applied upstream between version 2.6.12 and 2.6.14. Try one of the Nitro-kernels from the Unsupported Software forums, or try vanilla, ck, or some other patchset, just to see if there's any improvement... |

I had this same problem, you have to disable everything that has to do with Hyperthreading as there was a change made from 2.6.12 to 2.6.13 kernels. _________________ Animula vagula blandula,

Possibly slightly off topic, but I'd always advise testing a vanilla kernel if you think you've hit on a regression. That way you can quite clearly determine if the issue is with a gentoo patch or an issue with Linus' mainline kernel, which at least points you in the right starting direction.
Are your kernels both monolithic? |
