Yesterday I intalled gentoo in my box and used 2006.0 release...
I followed the very same steps as always, checking the new handbook...

My memory usage used to be between 10-30% and now (using the same programs) it's always higher than 40, sometimes reaching more than 60%...
The reason seems to be since I reinstalled gentoo, the swap is not being used, and I don't know why!
It's mounted on a logical partition in a sata hd...
here's my fstab:
Code:
/dev/sda1               /boot           reiserfs        defaults,noatime        1 2
/dev/sda2               /               reiser4         noatime                 0 1
/dev/sda5               none            swap            sw                      0 0
/dev/sda6               /usr            reiser4         defaults                0 0
/dev/sda7               /var            reiser4         defaults                0 0
/dev/sda8               /tmp            reiser4         defaults                0 0
/dev/sda9               /home           reiser4         defaults                0 0
/dev/cdrom              /mnt/cdrom      auto            noauto,user             0 0
/dev/fd0                /mnt/floppy     auto            noauto,user             0 0
none                    /proc           proc            defaults                0 0
none                    /dev/shm        tmpfs           nodev,nosuid,noexec     0 0

Can someone give me some help, please?
I don't have any idea of how to solve this.
thx in advance!

RAM is much faster than the swap space on the harddisk.
So why should memory swaped out on harddisk, when there is enough free memory in the RAM?
This is intended to be so.

How are you measuring your memory usage? Could you post the output of the command?

Code:
user@home ~ $ free
total             used            free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:                             514368        447360      67008          0         12     207084
-/+ buffers/cache:                           240264       274104
Swap:                            1180736     260              118047

This '260' never changes no matter how many times I run 'free'

I know there's pretty much free RAM, the problem is, my pc is much slower than before, and this swap thing is the only reason I can imagine for the problem... And before that, even with low memory usage, the swap was always being working.
thanks!

Today even the keyboard lights didn't work... had to reset
looks like its using to much resources to execute simple programs...

I don't think swap usage is a problem - there is no need to use swap (at all) if you have plenty of RAM available. (Linux might utilize swap if it thinks it needs more memory for cache). Sounds like you have some hardware problems going on. Check the CPU/Mobo temperature. Also test your memory for errors. Have you overclocked recently?
