|
|
I have a new computer with an AMD64 CPU
and an nVidia motherboard in it.
I just downloaded the Gentoo AMD64 2006.0 install CD,
but I can't get it to connect to the Internet.
It has a 10de:0269 integrated gigabit ethernet.
The installer CD detects that it should use the forcedeth driver,
which does make a eth0 device appear, however
that device does not work.
Upon loading the driver, it says that it is
forcedeth version 0.48 and
no link during initialization (twice).
How can I get ethernet to work?
Is there a tweak to get this driver to work?
Am I using the wrong driver? |

You're not the only one... https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-437611.html
I've been looking into that issue for more than an entire day and tried lots of things... no success.
Easiest workaround would be to use a PCI network card with a well-supported chipset instead.

Thank you for the reply. It would be easier to find if you put the PCI id in there. That is what I searched for. I guess that I will put another card in there. I still need to get the driver to work after installing Gentoo, though. We have a bunch of identical machines and I want to clone the hard drive using dd over the network. I don't know how practical it would be to have to buy new ethernet cards for all of them. |

I don't know who's in charge of the forcedeth driver development but maybe there's some bugzilla where you can file a bug and check what the developers say?
Makes me wonder why I didn't get the idea sooner, heh...
Can't check right now myself, unfortunately.

I had that problem with forcedeth. Problem disappeared after recompiling forcedeth driver into kernel. |

I have a nForce3 Mainboard. I compiled the driver as modules, but it was not loaded during boot.
After I included the driver directly into the kernel, the network was functional. |
