I'm running ~amd64, when playing back any video file with mplayer I get about 1 second of video playback before it hangs. Errors are thrown out
Code:
alsa-play: write error: Broken Pipe0.000\
alsa-play: trying to reset soundcard

I'm not running esd or arts, just running mplayer from terminal in fluxbox.

Mplayer-bin plays back fine.

I have the exact same problem. It just recently started happening to me. mplayer-bin also produces these same errors.

This is the output I get from one video,

Code:

I seem to have the issue with anything I can throw at mplayer. In each instance though, mplayer bin works fine.

Here's my mplayer output.

MPlayer interrupted by signal 13 in module: vo_check_events
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

Playback will either happen very quickly, and end with a long chain of the alsa-play errors, or it will hang after a few frames as in the case above.

I have a problem with mplayer and alsa as well. It simply will not play anything. It freezes at
Code:

Starting playback...
A:   0.0 (unknown) of 285.0 (04:45.0) ??,?%

and I have to Ctrl-C to kill it. Using the "ao sdl" flag on the command line makes it work fine. Everything else using alsa works fine. This just started happening a while ago.

Try using sdl audio.

Code:
mplayer movie.avi -ao sdl

It works every time. But alsa is mostly making problems lately. But some months ago it was ok. I don't know the solution with alsa.

I had some of that problems (broken pipe, PCMs,x...) finally resolved setting device and mixer-channel mplayer's options. Now I'am using mplayer 1.0.20060302 with alsa happyly... :D

Extract from my /etc/mplayer.conf

#################
# audio settings #
##################

ao=alsa:device=hw=0.0

mixer-channel="Analog Front"
#use alsamixer (for example) to know your mixer-channel
