PostPosted: Thu Mar 02, 2006 4:24 pm    Post subject: boot process hangs up with cdrom installed Reply with quote

Hi all,
This is my first post so please forgive any errors. I'm using 2.6.15-gentoo-r1 kernel on a Dell Inspiron 8200 with a TOSHIBA DVD and a detachable TEAC CDROM/RW. My problem is the system hangs at "Mounting local file systems ..." when the TEAC CDROM is inserted. If the CDROM is not insert the system boots. I have stopped the boot process just before this step and saved the output of dmesg:

Code:

In my .config I have all ATAPI except tape and SCSI except tape marked as "y".
After I stopped the system before the mounting local file systems step my TEAC CDROM was in the /dev/hdc where it is suppose to be. I could mount it. What could be causing the system to lock up?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi,

Could you paste the error too ? Or does it just hangs without saying anything ?

It just hangs. That's what has made this so hard to trouble shoot.

I should have mentioned this earlier, I was able to boot from this drive with the Gentoo live CD. The CDROM module isn't broken.

After experimenting some more, I found that if iI wait 20 - 30 minutes it does boot. So now I'm looking searching the web and here for information on how to solve this slow boot issue.
