I'm new to Gentoo (and Linux in general TBH) and have recently managed to install a Gentoo system to my machine but I'm having trouble getting the mouse to work, at the moment I only have a CLI but during the install I had a working mouse which isn't there now (despite me loading all the modules that were running at the time the minimal CD was running). I looked in the /dev directory and theres no /dev/mouse on my system. I'm also unsure about what modules are the right ones (like I said, I'm using all the ones from the CD but have no idea which is which generally).

I compiled the Kernel using the automated script (genkernel?). Does anyone have any idea how to go about getting the mouse working and is there some kind of guide to which modules are for which device so I know better what I need to load.

Cheers in advance.

you aren't going to see the mouse until you have a GUI. look in /dev for psaux or in /dev/input for mouse0

If I can't get one thats no problem but I only ask because the install disc gives you one in the command line. It was useful for using the links browser during install. I'm also getting a problem with Xorg anyway, it was installed as a dependancy for links and when I enter the startx command I get

Fatal server error:
Cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busids for all framebuffer devices.

Should really ask in the desktop environment forum but I didn't want to start a new thread.

The install disc does a hardware detection to load all available modules for your system. If you want something like that also for your installed Gentoo then you should use genkernel with appropriate init script (refer to Gentoo Handbook for more info).

If you get an error regarding a framebuffer mode problem then it means there something really bad with your kernel graphic adapter configuration. I know that similar problems happened while using some nVidia cards without the official drivers installed.

Perhaps you should open a new topic in Installing Gentoo since I guess that these problems fit this area more.

dont worry about things until they are problems, You cannot get one once you have booted off the hdd. Just use links like normal.

Also, at no point should Xorg be installed as a dependency. Stop playing with it until you go to configure it. Use links in text mode.

no, he's trying to configure parts of his system that rely on ones that he has not configured yet.

Well, at least I tried...

In fact I never installed links and other programs for daily use before the X server because while using the Universal CD I had everything I needed including links. And also perhaps I was under pressuere to make KDE work as soon as possible so that the users can use it and everything other had to wait
