I installed gentoo and there is a sysmlink in the boot dir to .
It makes an end less loop, is that there for a certain reseson? |

My understanding is that it simplifies paths for grub. For example, when you mount your boot partition, it's usually mounted as /boot, and the grub-specific stuff is in /boot/grub/*. However, when grub mounts it to read menu.lst and everything else, it's mounted at /, so the paths aren't the same. Having the circular symlink just makes things easier on us humans.
