WPA hardware support?

Does anyone know if WPA requires physical hardware support in the wireless card?

The reason I've begun to suspect this, is that I have a PrismGT-based wireless card in my laptop (an Xterasys XG600 i believe). It works fine with the prism54 driver, and no problems connecting to normal unprotected networks or running as AP in master-mode, but I have never been able to connect to a WPA-protected network, even in windoze.
