Both in firefox and konqueror. All other sound apps I can think of play without a problem and the built-in alsa mixer works.
So, where do I start?
Oops... correction. It appears that everything works in alsa mode, but not in OSS mode. /dev/dsp is always busy... what to do?

I have the same problem (sometimes) in KDE. Since you're using Konqueror, I'll assume you're also using KDE.
Try starting firefox/konqueror using 'artsdsp':

Are you piping sound through artsdsp? (In Konqueror, check Settings | Configure Konqueror, plugins section, plugins tab (there's a checkbox "Use artsdsp to pipe sound through aRts"))? Are you starting firefox using artsdsp?

Thanks, it works with this configuration, konqueror at least (haven't tried ff yet).
But it should also be possible to do via OSS and without artsdsp. I can swear it used to work before some upgrade or another... |
