I have been running fink for a long time. I tried gentoo, but I wasn't very satisfied with emerge. Honestly i was very disappointed. Did anyone know if the gentoo system got any better and/or what do u guys think about the darwin system?

I'd say Darwin ports is about as reliable as Fink, and Gentoo portage (having the potential to greatly outdo both) is more reliable now, although less so than either Fink or Darwin ports. And by reliable, I mean able to compile/install a certain package without erroring.

If you're looking for a graphical installer, I'd stick with Fink.

Hmm, Gentoo OS X forum seems to have just about the least frequent posters. I used portage on my mac for a while but at the time it was rather buggy, and I finally hosed it when it tried to emerge gentoo-sources. I upgraded Fink to the latest version and removed portage. I get a new mac laptop when Panther is released and I may try portage again.
