From time to time kde login manager doesn't start. Without any specific reason. When i boot it says setting up kdm. But then i get a black screen which returns to text login manager. My /etc/rc.conf XSESSION=Xsession

.xinitrc i have startkde. xdm is added to default level. Luckily, I manage to solve this problem usually by
Code:
 mv .xinitrc .xinitrc.old
echo "startkde" > ~./.xinitrc or sometimes "echo "exec startkde" >~./.xinitrc

Still it is quite annoying to do that. I never know when kde will crash again. I wonder what could be the reason it happens.

should not your XSESSION="kde" in your /etc/rc.conf without the # before XSESSION.

And DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" for login screen.

The xsession depends on your KDE version. Mine is XSESSION="kde-3.4.3"

Could be right. I always had Xsession=Xsession and it used to work without problems (at least with old kde). Since the new installation of kde 3.4.4 all these troubles began. But perhaps you both are right. I will give it a try. Right now i sent the laptop for repair (battery problem). When i tried to startkde from command line i used to get this error:

xsetroot:unable to open display
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ""
startkde:Starting up
ksplash:cannot connect to X server
kdeinit:Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set
Warning: connect() failed: No such file or directory
ksmserver:cannot connect to X server
ERROR:Couldn't attach to DCOP server
startkde:Shutting down
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
startkde: Running shutdown scripts
startkde:Done

Sounds like it isn't starting xorg. Check your config file for errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I think I have the same problem. Sometime I just cant get into KDE unless I use a new system user.

Code:

/usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde: line 254: xset: command not found
/usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde: line 255: xset: command not found
/usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde: line 258: xset: command not found
/usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde: line 268: xsetroot: command not found
startkde: Starting up...
Warning: connect() failed: : Connection refused
/usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde: line 356: 27615 Segmentation fault      kwrapper ksmserver $KDEWM
startkde: Shutting down...
Warning: connect() failed: : Connection refused
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
/usr/kde/3.5/bin/startkde: line 373: artsshell: command not found
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.

I last time I fixed it by removing all dotfiles for KDE but that is just painful. I'm now login in as a different user and everything works fine, if I try my regular user then KDM kicks my out.

Perhaps check "echo $PATH" and look for differences between the two users. And the groups you are a member of.

I checked the file. Since the file is 2500 lines long, i used grep "(EE)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log ( to check for errors). Here is what i found
Code:

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(EE) I810(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.

If you need any more info, please let me know.

The users are identical, the only difference is that the primary user has KDE set up like I want it (fonts, icons ect). Now I have him almost using the default setup after removing .kde* to finally log in.

Now everytime I log in I just pray that the primary KDE compoments survive the login since they crash randomly.

@queen: The first thing that strikes me is that your Xorg only has a resolution set for 24 and no DefaultDepth (in the screen section). I'm not sure of the specifics of how Xorg processes this file, but perhaps set a resolution for each colour depth you have, and set DefaultDepth. I also hear that the Intel graphics driver supplied with Xorg is very picky about hardware, so look around the internet and see if there is anything about your specific model of laptop. I would also try Driver "vesa", that seems to work with everything.

@pjesi: If things are crashing randomly, perhaps it is a hardware problem. I'd check your CPU temperature and make sure it isn't creeping up too high. Looking at your error log (posted a little up), things are seg faulting. Perhaps reinstall KDE, something might have got corrupted somewhere. I just noticed that startkde cannot find xset and xsetroot, do a whereis on each of these and make sure they exist, and run them manually to make sure they execute. startkde is just a script, so open it up and make sure it is actually looking in the right place for them. Given that your Xorg seems to be starting fine (from what you've been saying), I'm going to presume that your Xorg installation is OK.

When i installed xorg, that's how it came, without DefaultDepth. Which version of xorg you have?Since i knew that my resolution is 1024x768 i left as it was. AS for vesa you might be right. I have built in the kernel vesa-fb. So you say that i should set in xorg file to vesa instead of dri?

I found someone who has the same laptop as mine. Here is his setup: http://people.cc.jyu.fi/~paju/hardware/sigmatrix/xorg.conf.txt

If you can help me a little bit to what i should put in my xorg reffered to his setting, i will be grateful. I am a little bit confused between

Section "Device"
Identifier "intel"
VendorName "Intel"
BoardName "GM"
Driver "i810"

Option "DPMS"
Option "DisplayInfo" "off"

# same stuff on all monitors
Option "MonitorLayout" "NONE,CRT+LFP"
EndSection
AND
Section "Device"
Identifier "intel-tv"
VendorName "Intel"
BoardName "GM"
Driver "i810"

Option "DPMS"
Option "DisplayInfo" "off"

Option "DevicePresence" "true"
Option "MonitorLayout" "CRT+TV+LFP,NONE"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "screen0"
Monitor "monitor0"

Device "intel"

DefaultColorDepth 24

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600" "1280x1024"
EndSubsection
EndSection

I don't have a tv or external monitor connected. and i see he uses other driver too.
Here is a more detailed setup of the laptop.
http://people.cc.jyu.fi/~paju/hardware/sigmatrix/

I am a little bit confused between Graphics / X intel-agp, i915 i810 AND
Graphics / console vesafb
