This is a fresh Gentoo install -- the whole system is just a couple days old. I am not using any masked packages. I used the monolithic xorg-x11 and am running the stock KDE desktop from split ebuilds. I think my tool chain is from the most recent stage-3 tarball.

I had a similar problem on my older Gentoo system and downgrading to mplayer 1.0_pre7-r1 fixed the problem there. There is a security problem with the older versions so I would like to get the newer version working on my new system. I had hoped that it would just work on the newer system. I checked and the older mplayer works on the new system too. I moved ~/.mplayer out of the way but that didn't make any difference.
