|
|
Hi guys,
I am brand new not only to this forum but I am also brand new to linux and gentoo. I've played around with redhat a little before but its nothing to write home about. I am however very good at windows and understand some programing so thats helped a lot with the transistion.
I currently have gentoo up and running with internet. I typed
"emerge kde"
and it did its thing for about 20hrs straight.
Now my question is... what to do next? I am just left with a prompt.
Do I have to edit a file to link the term "xwindows" with KDE's exe file or something?
Is "startkde" suppose to work?
Is the program already installed from my emerge command or do i have to un-tar something and install some of the files it downloaded?
All I want to do now is just get KDE up and running.
Sorry if this has been covered before in this forum, I tried searching around first before posting. However, I didn't find anything that directly pertained.
Thanks for the help! |

to get kde up quick do
nano ~/.xinitrc
type:
#!/bin/bash
exec /usr/kde/3.1/bin/startkde
exit and save.
now type:
startx
That will work on any linux distro, not just Gentoo. |

There is a better way IMHO.
Open /etc/rc.conf, uncomment and set DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
Then do Code: | # /etc/init.d/xdm start |
(you need to configure Xfree first of course).
You might also add xdm to the default runlevel: Code: | # rc-update add xdm default |

The easiest way is to just type kdm, and login. |

But it's nice to know how to automate things... _________________ I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. |

But why use kdm at all? What useful function does it serve? |

Good question.
I appreciate the feedback guys!!!
___________
I have tried all of the solutions on this page and nothing seems to work yet.
Even though I already did "emerge kde" I went through the KDE install page and un-tar-ed
"kdebase-3.1.1.tar.bz2"
in the directory
"/usr/portage/distfiles"
per instructions listed in red below...(i think "emerge kde" and the instructions below both install the program...am i right?)
The source .tar.bz2 package installs into /usr/local/kde by default. You can override this setting by using the --prefix option of the configure script.
Procedure 4.3.
1.unpack the packages with tar jxvf packagename.tar.bz2
2.change directory to the package directory: cd packagename
3.configure the package: ./configure
Note:
Some packages (notably kdebase) have special configuration options that might be applicable to your installation. Type ./configure --help to see the available options.
4.build the package: make
5.install the package: su -c "make install" (if you aren't already root). If you already are, just type make install.
4.6.Post-installation procedures
First of all, please make sure that you have added KDE's binary installation directory (e.g. /opt/kde/bin) to your PATH and KDE's library installation directory to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH (only necessary on systems that do not support rpath; on Linux® ELF, it should work without). This environment variable may be called differently on some systems, e.g. it is called SHLIB_PATH on IRIX®. Then set the environment variable KDEDIR to the base of your KDE tree, e.g. /opt/kde.
However, the Post-installation instructions which refer to the PATH or the LD_LIBRARY_PATH don't tell you if, "PATH" is a file, where it is or what...so that confuses me.
Also it refers to this file called .xinitrc or .xsession, later on, which I have no clue where to find. I assume they are hidden because of the initial dot but what dir they are in is beyond me.
___________
Besides that I have emerged xfree which i understand is necessary for kde.
I set up the rc.conf file and kdm like -bsolar- suggested.
___________
When I type kdm (which i believe you do 1st)
Nothing happens
When I type startx
i get a bunch of text that says it saves to a log file "/var/log/Xfree86.0.log" and ends with this message
"XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining"
When I type startkde i get the following...
xsetroot: unable to open display''
xset: unable to open display ""
startkde: Starting up...
startkde: Running kpersonalizer...
kwin: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
etc...
___________
I realize I have posted a ton of questions at one time, but any help would be VERY MUCH appreciated! Thanks! |
