Hi,

I've got an interesting problem... I tried updating my system by doing a little

emerge rsync
emerge -u portage
emerge -u world

script. On the world part it failed due to conflicts with XOrg (I checked in the forum how to fix this, this isn't the question). I held back unmerging XOrg and emerging the newest since I was working on the computer at the time. A few hours later, some software crashed a nice permanent death and I rebooted.

And now I can't log back on!!! X, KDE doesn't start as normal. Instead, I just get the login prompt. So, I entered "root" or any usersname and I don't get asked a password! It just goes back to asking me for a login!

Help!!

emergeing new xorg + enmerging the old one during an active x session is not contraindicated in any way whatsoever. im not sure what went wrong, but in your place id just boot off of a cd, chroot and emerge world again.

Try to chroot to your system from a liveCD and
Code:
emerge shadow
I think that is the problem.

A while back there was a problem with shadow and pam modules.. I think it was when you emerged the new shadow it
didnot work with pam login.
But if I remember right, I got in via stopping the interactive startup and getting into maint. mode cntr-D
then starting up my network manually. Then fixing the pam and shadow conflict.
If I find the link I will post it..
Search forums for shadow and/or pam login problems.
