Argh!!! I only saw this now. Last night I had Xgl working with KDE but when I minimized a window, it would disapear. I left gnome compiling when I left home hoping that would not happen with gnome. Looks like I won't be that lucky will I? :(

Thry killing gnome-panel and starting it again. f that doesn't work, try adding a window list to it (after having killed and restarted it).

I was using KDE. I emerged gnome to see if it would work in gnome. But I found a lot more problems with gnome and went back do kde.

Anyway, there's a workaround in the wiki. Start KDE without Xgl, Control Center->Desktop->Taskbar->Show Applications From All Desktops (or something similar). Save it and restart KDE with XGL. Now you will be able to see applications in the taskbar but, as expected, from all desktops. Still better that nothing.

Note that you'll only be able to see this option in Control Center when you run KDE under plain xorg (without Xgl).

I'm having some problems compiling xgl. Can anyone shed any light on the situation? I'vetried updating the slang library to no avail.

Just got XGL working and it's very nice! However when I go to run xchat I get this:
Code:
> xchat
The program 'xchat' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadImplementation (server does not implement operation)'.
  (Details: serial 172 error_code 17 request_code 129 minor_code 5)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
   that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
   To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
   option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
   backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Anybody else get this or know what's going on? I tried recompiling but to no avail..

Should also note that I'm running X-Chat version 2.6.1.

Was this in relation to my point? If so, it still outputs the same error on compile.

Yeah it was. Make sure you "patch" it in this order:

1. unpack the source with ebuild /path/to/your/ebuild unpack
2. Patch file
3. run ebuild /path/to/your/ebuild merge to finish instalation

thats what i did and it fixed the same problem that your having now.

I've run into a small problem getting xgl to compile. Actually, it's evolution-data-server and it's being caused by libXft, from what I can tell. I've been following this howto http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_XGL and I'm almost finished. The section I'm on is emerge -av xgl compiz. All has gone fairly well, except for libXft causing problems earlier. It was blocking xorg-7 which was already emerged and working. I had been using xorg-7 since I installed gentoo on my laptop about 3 weeks ago.
Now evolution-data-server is wanting libXft again to finish compiling, but it blocks xorg6.8 and I haven't quite figured out why it's trying to pull that package in. I've got it in package.mask to block older versions of xorg, so....?

Here's my errors and whatnot.

Code:

So, re-emerged libXft at this point. That went fine. Back to mesa/xgl/compiz after that gives me the following.

I guess what I don't get is, why is xorg 6.8 being pulled in at all? It seems to be causing the issues I'm having.

Also, here's my emerge --info

Hi,
I got everything compiled and when I try and start Xgl I get this error....
Code:
Xgl :1 -ac -accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:pbuffer
X Error of failed request:  BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  142 (GLX)
  Minor opcode of failed request:  3 (X_GLXCreateContext)
  Serial number of failed request:  29
  Current serial number in output stream:  30

OK,
I solved this issue but now when I run the startxgl script iI get a second window with a blue background and nothing else. I also cannot do anything in the window. Here is what shows up. I will be looking through the wiki and google for answers anyhelp would be great.... I am running this on a amd64 system and ati xpress 200 card.
Code:
./startxgl 1 kde ati
###### STARTXGL SCRIPT ######
Starting X Server with XGL
   Using Display 1
   Using WM: kde
   Using Card: ati
No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 4 (32770), nplanes = 24
No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = 4 (32770), nplanes = 24
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/OTF, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/CID/, removing from list!
   Starting compiz
   Starting Window Manager
   DONE!

Well got everything solved, now running Xgl on screen 1

I only wanted to tell everybody that I just found this at http://de.opensuse.org/Xgl_unter_SUSE_Linux_verwenden ( german ) :

Setting for Xgl using nvidia propietary driver to use accelerated function fbo of the nvidia driver instead of pbuffers :

-accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv:fbo

while the gentoo xgl wiki states

-accel glx:pbuffer -accel xv

I will now try the novell/suse recommended setting to check if I see any difference ( its so fast already that I don't think I will see any difference anyway ).

at the beginning of discussions in this forum both variants were posted.
for me there is no difference, i have tested both and same performance.

EDID:
Theres a new Version u can grep here
http://orgizm.net/~daniel/cubecolor-0.1.tar.bz2

Hey ho!!
I made a C Skript for some nice Colorfades at the Top and Bottom of the Cube of Compiz, maybe someone would use it.
I finished it yet, and i just added a blue fade. For some different Colors edit the extarnal file "color.config"
now heres the code:
cubecolor.c:
Code:
/***************************************************************************
 *   Copyright (C) 2006 by Daniel Bessler                                  *
 *   deadlyvenom@gmx.de                                                    *
 *   Description:                                                          *
 *   Colorfade on top and bottom of compiz cube                                          *
 *   Todo:                                                                 *
 *   Skript ends when X ends                                               *
 *   XSERVER=system("ps -A | grep Xgl | cut -b 25-27"); or so              *
 ***************************************************************************/

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <string.h>

char TIME[5]="0.15\0"; //Time to load the next color
char EXECUTE[83];

fade (char farbe[7], char ZEIT[12]) {
     strcpy(EXECUTE,"gconftool --type=string -s /apps/compiz/plugins/cube/screen0/options/color ");
     strcat(EXECUTE,farbe);
     printf("exec: %s\n",EXECUTE);
     system(EXECUTE);
     system(ZEIT);
}

main () {

int  x=1,i=1;
char RATE[12], farbe[10], COLOR[1024][7];
FILE *config_ptr;

//waittime
strcpy(RATE,"sleep ");
strcat(RATE,TIME);

//Read extern File
config_ptr=fopen("colors.conf","r");
while(fgets(COLOR[i],7,config_ptr)) {
if(COLOR[i][0] == ';')
i--;
i++;
}
i=i-1;
fclose(config_ptr);

printf("\t\t %i different Gradations\n\n",i);

while(x) {
x=1;
while(x <= i) {
    strcpy(farbe,"\"#");
    strcat(farbe,COLOR[x]);
    strcat(farbe,"\"");
    printf("%s\n",farbe);
    fade(farbe,RATE);
    x++;
}}
}

And here the Syntax of the color.conf:
Code:
000000;
06031c;
0b052d;
0f073d;
100746;
130950;
180a69;
1a0b73;
1c0c80;
1f0d88;
210e96;
230ea3;
250fab;
2810b8;
2b13c1;
2a10c9;
2a10c9;
2b13c1;
2810b8;
250fab;
230ea3;
210e96;
1f0d88;
1c0c80;
1a0b73;
180a69;
130950;
100746;
0f073d;
0b052d;
06031c;
000000;

maybe someone has some tips how to code it better, or a mathematical function for a colorfade would be also cool
cya

Hi gravedigga_23,

this sounds interesting. But to be honest: I'm too lacy to check this out, since I don't exactly know what it looks like.
Can you post a screenshot, or better a video clip of the animation recorded with "xvidcap" for example?

This would be nice.

Xgl is crashing every time I load firefox. :( I'm using the most recent coffee overlay and just recompiled everything (glitz, glproto, compiz, xgl, and mesa) from cvs today. Starting other apps see to do it also, but every time I load firefox 1.5.0.1 it crashes. I'm thinking something is conflicting with a library or something (gtk+ a wild guess) and crashing Xgl. I just tried running Xgl without compiz running at all and it still happened. Any ideas guys?

When I start zsnes with Xgl, the window is a bit transparent (although I don't use a transparency plugin), and the black parts are complete transparent (I see nothing of them). I use xgl-20060216 and compiz-20060216 (from Hanno's overlay) and zsnes-1.42 (I tried every possible combination of USE-Flags for zsnes, always the same) on a nVidia card. Does anybody here have the same problem and/or knows how to solve it?
