I"m also having problems watching movies in XGL I've tried all the little tricks on the
Page telling me to compile without xv what options to use and so forth.
I can watch movies fine without going to full screen but I would like to watch my movies
full screen. I have a Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400 a 64 meg card but when I do a gtk-lshw
it tells me it's a 128 meg card which doesn't seem right. So it may be a different problem.
But if anyone else has had this problem or anything else please let me know.
I can watch a video(not full screen) compile and switch desktops with ease, but just watching a
video at full screen without doing anything else seems impossible.
Any help is appreciated

I tried to watch a DVD with kmplayer and I tried fullscreen mode with the X11 plugin and the GL plugin, but they didn't go fully fullscreen, just a big back area with the movie at the size it was before in it.
Also somewhere along there it took out the window decorations, it crashed the gnome-window-decorator, I was able to get it back just by running it in a konsole _________________ Admiral Trigger Happy

Just in case you missed it: From the HOWTO
This solved it for me and totem and gxine both run fine with gnome 2.14/xgl (Radeon 9550 256mb, amd64 3000+), even for large movies/xvid/divx/dvds etc. |
No I didn't
Everything is recompiled without xv support. I use an nvidia 6600 BTW _________________ If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit. |

I have Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400 32mg. I am able to watch fullscreen video
with mplayer. If i am compiling the fullscreen video slows down, but i get no lockups.
I can watch a video (not full screen) compile and switch desktops with no slowdown.
Current mplayer install was with "xv" support.

I switched my media players to use the X11/xshm driver instead of xv or opengl, and at least they work. I'm not completely pleased, however, because glxgears still nukes Xgl and I'm assuming any other OpenGL program will do the same. |

Hey People. I been silently watching this thread and have sucessfully got xgl to work.
Only thing I had to do differently (didnt see it mentioned anywhere) is
emerge =compiz-0.0.7_p20060321-r1
cause when I did emege compiz I kept getting
Code: | These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
Calculating dependencies
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-libs/libwnck-2.14.0 (masked by: package.mask)
# John N. Laliberte <allanonjl@gentoo.org> (12 Mar 2006)
# GNOME 2.14 mask. You must follow instructions here:
# for adding files from our overlay.
#Most of these packages will break/not compile because of eclass
#changes that won't be made until every package is in the tree.
#Don't unmask these and don't file bugs for them
# Start GNOME 2.14 mask
# do not forget about -extensions.
# speech-tools and festival do not compile with gcc 4.1
# remember, they are using the 2.6 series for 2.14
# so don't put this in the tree.
For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
(dependency required by "x11-wm/compiz-0.0.7_p20060322-r2" [ebuild]) |
Like I said it all works but now when I do an emege --update --world
it still wants to use compiz-0,0,7_p20060322-r2
using coffeebuzz overlay. updated this morning
I must of done something wrong as I havent seen anyone complaining about >=x11-libs/libwnck-2.14 |

Hi!
Quote: | I'm using gnome 2.12.3, and a nvidia card. I have Xgl working, but i don't have nothing like shadows, transparencys or something working. Xgl is working because if i kill gnome is also killed. |
That happened before reading some "hidden" lines from the how-to..
My problem now is related with the window borders. They just don't exist and the windows aren't movable. What may be happening?
Any tips?
Thanks _________________ Freedom works. Use it!

David has put a water plugin in cvs.
Here is a shot of it in action.
It is buggy. After the effect finishes, the screen freezes until you start the effect again. |

Thanks gravedigga. Should of mentioned the reason I worked around unmasking was cause of the rather
nasty message in this case.
Quote: | #Most of these packages will break/not compile because of eclass
#changes that won't be made until every package is in the tree.
#Don't unmask these and don't file bugs for them |
Yeah I know the risk involved and have unmasked when I needed to but this message here goes out of the way to say DONT do it.
LOL Im gonna bite the bullet and do it anyway. Not a production machine.
And no Devport. I didnt have that use flag to begin with. Thanks |

It works fine here BUT it is highly inefficient. Moving window and playing around with this plugin is slow, very slow. Also I think it is first plugin that requires pixel shader support from your graphics card (I may be wrong here so don't quote me on that please ).
For all people having problems with playing video files use mplayer -vo x11 (works for me). _________________ [HOWTO]New freetype subpixel font rendering for lcd monitors |

anyone having problems logging out of gnome/xgl?
when I click "Log Out" in Gnome on XGL, it just exits gnome-window-decorator, leaving behind compiz/xgl. does anyone know why that is? _________________ GNU/Linux is an operating system.

oh my GOD it finally RUNS! It's been a long time coming but at long last the thing runs like a dream. But here's the strange part. The only thing changed was GNOME. I spent several hours manually issuing 'emerge -C' to a variety of packages and ebuilds. After I've mostly purged it of anything related to the old GNOME install, I started installing each required packages (the 2.14 ebuild pulls in too much). Since the latest compiz requires the latest libwnck version, I figure I'd go through the entire gruesome process.
Each overlay release I try to check if I can run everything or certain program, then wait for Xgl to segfault. Finally I was able to fire up everything. The performance isn't the best. But now I can run GNOME with the fancy effects. And I am amazed at it. Basically nothing much has changed since I last updated (rev 151 I believe).
Finally I can say that Intel hardware fully works. wheeee! _________________ One shall stand. One shall fall. |

Thanks for the hint, it is not completely what I want, but it is a nifty feature. It places the window on the next side of the cube if you move it to the edge of the current workspace and keep it there for a defined amount of time. |

Can you list which Gnome packages you have installed and versions as well as which exact versions of packages in overlay? I'd like to record that somewhere and test myself. It would be good to have a baseline for Intel card. _________________ If God were a pickle, I'd still say "no pickle on my burger".

That's gonna be difficult. I just know that it's most of the GNOME 2.14 basic packages needed for minimal running. On my end, there's a bunch of ebuild pull for perl scripts and they're all related to Evolution. I only installed the necessary ones for running and from there, install the optionals that I feel I'd use.
As for the related ebuild versions for the overlay...
xgl-0.0.1_p20060327
mesa-6.5.0_p20060326
compiz-0.0.7_p20060322-r2
glitz-0.5.5_p20060323
cairo-1.1.1_alpha20060216
libXcomposite-0.2.2.2
libXfixes-3.0.1.2
Those are as much as I can gather. _________________ One shall stand. One shall fall. |

Are you using the new xf86-video-i810 from the overlay? Or the 1.4.1.3 from protage? Or something else? As well, are you using the i915_drv.so from Mesa 6.5.0 or 6.4.2?
Thanks. _________________ If God were a pickle, I'd still say "no pickle on my burger".

Or you could just killall gnome-panel. It should re-spawn.

How do I get them back? |
