Wireless configuration for my University's access poi CLOSED

Hi,
My University uses a particular setup for accessing wireless networking. As per usual they provide instructions fof configuration under Windows, and one also for MacOSX.

The details follow:

Authentication is open (not restricted)
Encryption is WEP
Encryption key is provided automatically
Uses 802.1x authentication extensions

For the authentication using 802.1x, the following is configured

EAP type is protected EAP
No server certificates are used
Authentication method is EAP-MSCHAPv2
Fast reconnect is enabled

I have read the appropriate section of the networking HOWTO for Gentoo for Wireless networking, but they all seem to require me to use a known key for WEP, and have no details on using Protected EAP or MSCHAPv2. I noticed that if I was creating an access point myself with hostAPD then I have some of these options, but I don't know how to use them as a client.

I need a few things answered:

How do I configure /etc/conf.d/net and/or /etc/conf.d/wireless for this configuraiton?
Do I use wireless-tools or wpa_supplicant for this configuration?
If I do use wpa_supplicant, what configuration options do I use in the appropriate configuration file?
Can I still bring the interface up and down easily through init scripts?
Can I configure the system to automatically connect to the appropriate ESSID when it is in range without? (NOTE: Only 1 ESSID is used)

Any other relavent information would be nice. Any other information that I haven't provided will gladly be given.

I suggest using wireless tools with a gui like wlassistant. So far that combination has allowed me to log on wirelessly just about everywhere. I used to use wpa_supplicant, but it got too troublesome adjusting the script whenever I ran across an access point.

I also have this problem, The very same AP I suspect.

wlassistant is not helpfull as far as I can see, as it only handles WEP.

Although I havn't yet got it working, xsupplicant seems to be the tool to do it. Check out this page:

I'm not sure how to get the root certificate though.

Thanks for your post "beerisgoodmate". I do hope to find a solution, but have not yet tested wlassistant. I will let you know soon, as I am starting to get back to using my laptop at Uni again.

I have got this working with my university's wireless connection (at the university of Iowa). I am not sure if you have access, but I have posted a how-to in the forums of our university acm site http://acm.uiowa.edu. I hope this helps.

I have since given up on configuring wireless access for Uni. I should be finishing this semester and don't require access any more. Someone did put a document on their web page for configuring Linux access to the wireless network at my Uni, but I believe the Uni has changed the way it all works since. I believe you now need a program just to get it working off Windows let alone anything else.
