|
|
when i saw there is a gaming-sources brach in gentoo for the linux kernel i thought at once of a network specific kernel, with latest freeswan, netfilter(iptables), .. patches applied.
I had some bad experience with netfilter and the gentoo-sources (kernel crash on PPTP nat close, fixed with current netfilter patch), but i think its hard to keep track of so many patches that are included in the gentoo-sources.
One size doesn't fit all, a kernel for a network server needs different kind of features that a gaming or workstation kernel.
Any comments on that idea ? how about filing a bugreport for it ? |

I'm building a Linux firewall and decided to use gentoo for various reasons. A solid network-sources would be a great source tree to use were it available.
I too have had the NATed PPTP kernel panic with the gentoo-sources - occurs when a PPTP session closes to a PPTP server that is DNATed inside the firewall. Can you outline the exact fix?
e.g. Download the vanilla sources and manually patch the latest patch-o-matic?
Thanks

While on the subject of a Gentoo server. What are the best sources to use for such a server? I am in the process of replacing a Debian network monitoring server with a Gentoo server. I am using gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r2 right now which is working fine.
Is there an even more optimized kernel that I should stride for?
Pehaps using vanilla? Just wanting some opinions. |

Have a look at the WOLK-sources.
It definately is a "one-size-fits-all" kernel. It has performance and stability patches, it also is incredibly secure. Take a look at it, it's in the portage tree. |
