I prefer just to run pure ~x86. I find generally it is perfectly stable and when it isn't it just gives me a challenge for when I'm bored to try and fix. XD Also i've found it rather painful to wait for the new features of the latest versions of things to filter through to the stable branch, and me being such an impatient soul I have to have them as soon as humanly possible. _________________ The Geek formerly known as -Freestyling-

I kinda run a hybrid lol. I have a lot of unstable packages mixed with a fairly stable core. GNOME for instance is the latest version, but I am running gcc 3.4.6.
It was a lot of typing in the /etc/portage/package.keywords file, but it is nice to have some of the more current apps. |

I'm beyond unstable. I make my own ebuilds and overlays, throwing in patches and trying to break things all the time. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

I love Gentoo too
But I have very few packages marked unstable, just the ones that really need it are put into package.keywords. My system feels fast to me so I'm staying as stable as I can _________________ AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+ AM2

I am on the contrary.
I have absolutely no USE flags set.
I also upgrade once in six months or if some important package got upgraded.
My system is perfectly stable and I am happy with that. |

Really dude, updating once every 6 months is a recipe for disaster, or a lot of work.
Besides, why use Gentoo if you don't use USE? |

The USE flags is the thing which makes Gentoo so great! I don't know another package manager as flexible as portage. It's just great!
@TS: the question is: "who doesn't love it?" _________________ Ep2.nl | Developers Community

Here is the deal.
I have done over 100 different installations of gentoo (mostly on my friends machines and lab machines on my campus) over the past 4 years includig two HPC installations. I have also probably gone through most of the docs. Every package has its own set of USE flags associated with it and my experiene tells me that not fiddling with the USE flags is probably the best way to keep your system up and running. I am not a linux expert and therefore I am scared, I may break the system. I am well aware that tweaking USE flags can save a lot of compile time as well as I can tweak the functionality I want in an app (for example do I want ipv6 support or not), but as of now, I have not witnessed any problem with that (the only USE flag I added manually was "readline" with gnuplot). On my beowulf, I have strictly followed Adiele linux guidelines (who recommend use of -* and then manually enabling only those flags that are necessary for the specific purpose the machine is being built).
Upgrading too often eats lot of your time and if something breaks, it is additional time spent on maintaining your system. For me, the uptime of my system is extremely important and before I do anything, I make several backups of the data that I have (including a backup on a virgin HD and then keeping it safely in my locker with date of backup). I plan to upgrade when kde4, gcc4 etc have become stable and have all issues sorted out. The only ~x86 app that I have installed is ICC (intel's c++ compiler). |

Ok, i see that
IMHO
gentoo is choice and choice is you
its all depend on you, as the owner
no matter how much we spend
if we feel better ....why not ? |
