Hi all
I would like to be able access my local network (relatively large) from a desktop (kde), rather than having to first search for connected hosts then laboriously mounting/unmountin them with samba through terminal.
I have tried to setup up lisa, and only succeeded in detecting the hosts Konquerer>Network Folders>Local Network (ie I can see all the pc connected) but I can't access any of the shared folders. the error given is "unknown host $HOSTNAME" for Windows shares (I think). Within other hosts I can enter the folder demarcating their pc name, displayer the relavent protocols if available (ftp, fish, smb, http) all these throw errors when I try to enter them. smb: "Could not start process, Unable to create io-slave: klauncher said: unknown protocol 'smb'" ;have tried to emerge with new use including samba; not sure about the io-slave thing though. with ftp folder; i'm asked to login (wanted to know if this login is set by the admin for lisa, or if this is the ftp login and password to the actual resource) http link asks for password, or nothing appears; and do not know anything about fish; but it does not work either.
I think its mainly the protocol issues, may have to run another emerge with smb in the use variable, or possibnly the passwords settings. For Control Center>Internet and Networking>Local Network Browsing>Windows tab; set username and password to have no value and used the default iso 8859-1 Ms Window Encoding.\
The windows users have access to the folders that I am sharing with no qualms. Sigh, thats way to much ammo for them in the Linux-vs-Windows debate...
I havent configured any other files in /etc/samba/ ; thought(hoped) that lisa could auto find all (+- 200) hosts without me having to explicitly specify them in a file, she can I think(hope) -not sure if she detects all the computers- . But she can't grant me access in the reverse...
I was curious to know if there are any decent Linux (Gentoo of course ) equivalents to Windows' sharescan, dc++ or flashxp. I read in the forums of a really bad dc client and the possiblity of a dc++ for linux a while back, but after hours of searching the forums and googling for answers I settled on posting the question.

Hi, i have samba in use flags and nothing else installed or configured here for lisa or so...
I can access the samba-net with a simple smb:/ as adress, and the whole net is browseable. When you click on a share, it asks for a pass...
You can also try smb4k which is very great for this purpose!
fish: is for ssh connections... |
