well, I wouldn't consider you lucky, a whole week without Gentoo? _________________ GNU/Linux is an operating system.

Well, depending on your hardware you could spend a week to set up the entire base system with Gentoo so... good luck! _________________ Bye,

Cool...
The main meta ebuild (gnome-base/gnome-2.14.0) is not in yet, but I've constructed my own by bumping all the versions and adding new packages where needed.
It looks like there's only a few packages left to hit portage... (based on gnome-2.14 release pkg versions)
Code: |
>=net-analyzer/gnome-nettool-2.13.91
>=net-misc/vino-2.13.5
>=gnome-extra/gtkhtml-3.10.0
>=media-libs/gst-plugins-base-0.10.5
>=app-text/evince-0.5.2
>=sys-apps/hal-0.5.7
>=mail-client/evolution-2.6.0
>=gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-1.6.0
>=gnome-extra/evolution-webcal-2.5.90
|
Good work guys! I am eager to help test this and stabilize it. |

There was a hal-0.5.7 at breakmygentoo so I just used that... seems to work fine, although for some reason I've noticed my USB jump drive which worked 100% in the previous gnome doesn't yet mount properly (it mounts, but the icon doesn't appear and the drive doesn't have its normal name...) I guess this might be because I'm emerging packages as they show up...

are you comfortable using gentoo???
why don't you try a more friendly distro maybe ubuntu???
if you feel good with gentoo then:
then wait for... maybe three or four days until all ebuilds of gnome 2.14 hit portage
then in a terminal type
and follow directions from this thread.
sorry my english... |

All you need to do is:
emerge "gnome-base/gnome"
If you want a working system right now, which will install 2.12. You don't want 2.14.0... it was just released 2 days ago and has not been packaged yet (by any distro).
Other possibilities for 2.14:
Ubuntu 6.x "Dapper Drake" will be out in April.
Fedora Core 5 is scheduled for later this month. |

Please read the Gentoo Handbook:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml
Refer to: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/index.xml?catid=desktop to install a working desktop (GNOME install and configuration can be found here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gnome-config.xml ). Gentoo has some extensive documentation to help you get comfortable. Please thoroughly read through the documentation as chances are, it will answer all of your questions. _________________ You're not afraid of the dark are you? |

Ok, so back on topic...
All the ebuilds for USE="accessibility" are in. I see they were committed this morning.
So, what's left?
>=net-misc/vino-2.13.5
>=gnome-base/gnome-screensaver-2.14.0
>=gnome-extra/gtkhtml-3.10.0
>=mail-client/evolution-2.6.0
>=gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-1.6.0
>=gnome-extra/evolution-webcal-2.5.90
>=sys-apps/hal-0.5.7
>=app-text/evince-0.5.2
>=media-libs/gst-plugins-base-0.10.5
# >=net-misc/vino-2.13.5
This is minor, is just a vnc server and I don't think anything depends on it. I left the version at the 2.12.x version for now.
# >=gnome-base/gnome-screensaver-2.14.0
A totally new package so I expect this one might be one of the last. (Can't wait though.. much nicer integration than Xscreensaver)
# >=gnome-extra/gtkhtml-3.10.0
This one has a potential to break stuff, but I beleive it should be slotted as "3.10", so it's not that bad.
I tried a version bumped ebuild, but there's more that needs to be adjusted because paths are not being defined correctly.
# >=mail-client/evolution-2.6.0
# >=gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-1.6.0
# >=gnome-extra/evolution-webcal-2.5.90
New Evolution (and evolution-webcal is a new package). No ebuild yet, just left at 2.12.x versions for now.
>=sys-apps/hal-0.5.7
Built and installed ok, it was a simple version bump, minus some old patches. It seems ok though automounting hotplugged devices has been broken on my system for a little while now, it does detect devices and create desktop icons. Thats probably an existing config issue I need to track down.
>=app-text/evince-0.5.2
Another simple version bump, just added to overlay and dropped one old patch. It built and installed along with deps (poppler and poppler-bindings).
>=media-libs/gst-plugins-base-0.10.5
Version bump, built ok. Installed totem 1.4.0 to test and it works though I've gotten it to segfault a couple times when abusing it (lots of rapid seeking in Xvid video).
(Sidenote: Upgrading totem upgrade broke Rhythmbox which depends on a totem lib which was upgraded, ugh) |

Does anyone have gnome-mount working with /etc/fstab entries? When ever I try to mount a device that a user can mount that is defined in /etc/fstab gnome-mount shows an error dialog box "You are not privileged to mount ***." Does anyone have anyway to fix this without removing the entries from /etc/fstab? _________________ Hindi ko naintindihan, pakiulit. Sometimes my code works. |

I circumvent fstab using coldplug (emerge coldplug && rc-update add coldpplug boot). You could try that. All things mount flawlessly and without needing a config file. Havent used fstab since moving to GNOME 2.12. _________________ You're not afraid of the dark are you? |

All of the ebuilds are now in portage except for:
>=sys-apps/hal-0.5.7
>=app-text/evince-0.5.2
>=media-libs/gst-plugins-base-0.10.5
And none of those are required to build (possibly hal), but for all of those a simple version bump is all that's needed.
I'm installing now (about 1/2 way done).
Already found bug #126740
I'd post my gnome-base/gnome-2.14.0.ebuild but I think it'll show up in portage pretty soon anyhow. PM if you want... |

coldplug doesn't mount. The current method for removable devices is for gnome-mount to tell hal to mount. hal then creates a mount point, and mounts the new device. To do this you need to have user space events enabled in the kernel. There used to be a need for hotplug / coldplug, but not any more. The problem is that I want to have consistent moun points for my dvdrom, and my floppy drive. I don't care to have those being mounted to a mount point that hal is creating, because the mount point is inconsistent, and depends on the disk label. Also when I exit gnome, and I go to the terminal I still want to be able to mount my cds/dvds. It is easy if I have fstab entries defining my dvdrom, and floppy drive. The problem is when I have those fstab entries gnome-mount then shows an error, "You are not privileged to mount ***", and so I want to either fix the problem, or see it fixed. If someone else has experienced the gnome-mount issue I am having, I would like to see how you solved it.
An updated gnome-mount will most likely need to go into portage. The reason being is that the gnome-mount-0.4 can't mount devices that aren't polled by hal. This is a bug, and has been fixed upstream. Either a new version or a patch will need to go into the gnome-mount-0.4 that is in portage. _________________ Hindi ko naintindihan, pakiulit. Ekiga is listed as part of the desktop at gnome.org, but I think it will be an optional package for Gentoo gnome 2.14
There are still a few optional packages that are nice:
gnome-power-manager
sabayon
nautilus-actions
pessulus
Optional games:
atomix
