I've been battling KDE for a week now and I thought I had a successful installation until I tried to load some applications. I know I made some bad decisions when I first installed KDE so I would like to COMPLETELY remove KDE and reinstall it properly. I know about emerge --unmerge but I need some advice as to how to determine what to unmerge. I learned a lot this week but frustration has started to set in. :?
Thx

More of a Portage question...

but do 'emerge -C kde' ... then when that's done you should be able to get away with, 'emerge --depclean' to remove all of it's deps that are no longer needed, then 'revdep-rebuild' to clean it all up.

What were the bad decisions?

A complete re-install probably isn't required.

Bad decisions:
Wrong use flags.
KDE emerge kept failing and I tried several commands off the forum until I found the right combination to get kde base installed. The apps wouldn't install because of blocking and I fixed that but then the apps still wouldn't load. I have managed to get KDE removed but now I'm back to square one with emerge KDE failing. :? I've been studying the USE flags this weekend and maybe that's fixed. I also probably didn't have the right USE flags set when I installed the base Gentoo system. Definitely a noob at Gentoo though I have some unix experience (AIX).
Thx

Ok, I managed to remove KDE and set the USE flags properly. I reinstalled X11 which I had previously installed after KDE and configured X11 which I hadn't done before. I then emerged KDE and configure it and now have a happy system. I made a lot of mistakes because I jumped in without reading a whole lot. My goal is to test Gentoo and if it's stable then test it for a manufacturing environment. I'm a developer and would be writing C++ programs on linux that is used on our manufacturing lines.
Thx for the help... :D
