Hi ,
Let me just begin by saying that im a complete linux newbie. i have 0% experience with it.
I have a book here, O'Reilly "Running Linux", It tells me how to install and everything, but i can't do any of what it says since i can't get the cd to boot properly.
I tried installing Gentoo. I booted from the CD and while scanning and loading up the Modules, i noticed it took a really long time (3 minutes maybe) to load ata_piix.
After that, it showed some messages like:
Attempting to mount CD: /dev/sda...
and made some other attempts, but it seemed to have stopped and froze.
(I didnt get a warnings or error messages)
system:
Pentium D 80 @2.8
1gb ram
300GB SATA drive
Nvidia 6600gt
mobo:
I'm not sure. It came with my computer (HP)
chipset:
Intel Lakeport-G i945g

Are you using LiveCD, if so which version?
Try using the latest version. If you are using the latest, try using a previous version. I know 2005.x works for me.
Are you sure your hardware is working correctly?
Was this a windows box previously? If so did you have any hardware issues?
Can you boot using a knoppix CD?
Can you boot using another OS Install CD? _________________ What if there was no such thing as hypothetical questions? |

Hello and thanks for replying.
Like i said, im new to linux world and im not sure what knoppix is.
I tried installing another distro after gentoo, and no luck either.
Then i unplugged my Hard Drive, and the CD loaded fine.
I have tried the newest gentoo livecd and an older one too. (2005)
Yes it's a windows box. i have partitioned through partition magic.
So bottom line is, the cd loads fine if i unplug the hard drive, so im guessing it's something to do with the hard drive |

I would agree with your diagnosis _________________ What if there was no such thing as hypothetical questions? |

Cool, Knoppix doesn't require a hard drive to function.
But when you boot in to knoppix can you see you drives mounted? _________________ What if there was no such thing as hypothetical questions? |

yes. even when logged off knoppix, during it's closing messages, it said "unmounting "/something/something" |
