slow playback in mplayer (or black screen using -vo xv)

Hi ,

when i try to load videos with the -vo xv the video window only shows black screen (Audio is fine though).
i tried using the gl/gl2 outputs but there i get slow sometimes corrupted playback and constant flickering if in full screen.
the -vo x11 option plays pretty smoothly but only renders on part of the window and increasing the window size doesn't help just get a black screen around the video.

any suggestions ?
