The SPEs do work on the PS3 in Linux already (theres some programs floating around to demo them). Unfortunately it doesn't seem like anything has been optimized for the PS3 so it performs around the speeds of a similar PPC machine (most likely any benchmarks will be somewhat depressing till things are optimized).

I installed Gentoo and added
Code:
PORTAGE_BINHOST="http://ftp-chi.osuosl.org/pub/gentoo-ps3/grp32/All/"
to make.conf

but every time i use
Code:
emerge -g <application>
I get an error that reads

Code:
Fetching binary package info...
Location has moved: http://ftp-chi.osuosl.org/pub/gentoo-ps3/grp32/All
cache skipped(i forgot what it said) 'x' ... cache hit 'o'

I'm attempting install Gentoo on my PS3 using the guide within this site, although as you can see from the screen shot below the numbers/drive space don't match that of the guide, is this ok or is there something wrong?

Complete Linux super ultra mega noob btw.

Any help would be much appreciated :?

EDIT: I gave 10GB to the PS3 OS and 50GB to Linux.

Well I carried on anyway with the rest of the install, on completion and final reboot I'm now faced with a login screen, "Welcome to localhost" ???

Is this correct? If so I have no idea what the login/password is? Please help!?

That screenshot looks correct (the 47.1GB for /dev/sda at least, the amounts given to sda1 and sda2 look right as well).

Also the username/password should be whatever you set during the install (hopefully you at least set the root password during the install, if you set any try using username 'root' and whatever password you gave it). If you have no clue of any username/passwords, you need to boot back off the install CD, mount the root partition, chroot in, and run 'passwd' and set a root password, then add a user.

You should setup a normal user account to use for day to day tasks and only use 'root' for things that require it (though with "su" and "sudo" you shouldn't actually need to login as root).

Durring installation I setup a user name and password as per guide is this same thing?

On another note I'm trying to install KDE as per this guide....

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_KDE_Desktop_for_the_end-user

Not sure if this correct way to go for the PS3 but went ahead anyway. Been going through setup for about 5hrs now on stage 52 of 65??!!! Is the correct, should I continue to follow steps as stated in guide or is the wrong way for the PS3?

Current status.....

especially the point about ivman is no longer necessary. kde has it's own way mounting devices. please remove ivman and delete it from default run level to save you some headache.

not sure what you mean here. setting up and user and password is always OK. ;-)

looks good so far. compiling kde can take some time.

Is it possible to set the display resolution to WXGA+? My PS3 is connected to a computer lcd rather than an HDTV. It's currently at 1280x720 while Gentoo/XFCE-4 seems to be indicating a resolution of 1124x644.

Read here:

http://www.edepot.com/playstation3.html

According to this site, it is supposed to be possible. I tried to confirm this but wasn't successful. The article does specifically mention YDL. My question is how can this differ from one distro to another? I tried modifying my xorg.conf to see if it would work, but was not successful.

Perhaps, this:
Quote:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
DefaultFbBPP 32
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
FbBPP 32
Modes "1920x1080" "1280x720" "720x576" "720x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
FbBPP 32
Modes "1920x1080" "1280x720" "720x576" "720x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
FbBPP 32
EndSubSection
EndSection

can be modified to be more Gentoo friendly? Anyone here know why this entry on the xorg.conf within Gentoo would not work? I would love to fix the current 'fake' 720P / 1080P output resolution issues as soon as possible.

Thank you.

I tried something similar based on this article. Unfortunately the desktop resolution is still limited to that one odd choice (1124x644). On top of the fake 720/1080 output res, I'm looking to change it altogether to WXGA+; 720p on a display with a native resolution of 1440x900 is less than ideal.

My first install on the PS3 some days ago went well. Now I have mythtv without neither login nor window manager. It just starts straight after boot. As the poster above I'm also interested in getting true 1280x720 output maybe even 1366x760 (or whatever max is), blu-ray remote working and 720P video working smoothly. Are there any news for this? Did anyone manage to get any kind of control together with like MythTV?

PostPosted: Tue Feb 20, 2007 9:31 pm    Post subject: Kernel compile on Stage4 based 32ul install Reply with quote

So, I have read through the entire thread, however did not see anyone with my problem. So I will ask for the experts' help here.

What I am trying to do (eventually): compile UDF2.5 reader support into the kernel by patching in
Code:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1476807&group_id=295&atid=300295

What I am trying to do (currently): compile the kernel AS IS to learn to compile a kernel on the PS3.

What I have done so far:
  1. Install a 32bit userland version of Gentoo using the Stage4 tarball and the LiveCD method.
  2. Install kernel sources by:
    Code:
    wget ftp://ftp.uk.linux.org/pub/linux/Sony-PS3/CELL-Linux-CL_20061110-SRCCD.iso
    mount CELL-Linux-CL_20061110-SRCCD.iso /mnt/celliso -t iso9660 -o loop
    cd /usr/src
    rm -rf linux
    rm -rf linux-2.6.16-r1/
    tar jxvf /mnt/celliso/linux-20061110.tar.bz2
    ln -s linux-20061110 /usr/src/linux
    cd linux
    cp arch/powerpc/configs/ps3pf_defconfig .config

  3. Unmasked kgcc64 by putting
    Code:
    sys-devel/kgcc64        ~ppc
    in /etc/portage/package.keywords
  4. Emerged kgcc64 by
    Code:
    emerge kgcc64

  5. Backed-up/removed provided sources directive by
    Code:
    mv /etc/portage/profile/package.provided /etc/portage/profile/package.provided.old
so that Portage does not try to pick kernel sources from the provided overlay.
  6. "Try" to compile the kernel by
    Code:
    make

  7. Get the following error messages:
    Code:
:0: error: -m64 not supported in this configuration
:0: error: -m64 not supported in this configuration

:?: Can you please guide me as to how I will get the kernel compiled without these errors? What am I doing wrong? I know it has to be something simple/elementary, but cannot figure it out :( :?:

At this point, here is what I have:
  • /etc/make.conf
    Code:
    # These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
    # built this stage.
    # Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example.

    CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"

    # should probably be using a different stage, instead.

    MAKEOPTS="-j2"
    USE="X altivec nptl nptlonly"
    # PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/root/livecd/overlays/portage"

  • /etc/portage/package.keywords
    Code:
    sys-apps/portage        ~ppc
    sys-kernel/cell-sources ~ppc64
    sys-fs/udftools         ~ppc

I'm also interested in using a PS3 with MythTV for FullHD-playback.

I'm asking myself, if it is really fast enough for playing 1080P/h264/x264 encoded content?
The GPU can not help in decoding as of now, if i interpreted the Sony docs correctly and my Desktop/Workstation (Opteron 170@2,8GHz) isn't...

Unfortunately, there's still no hardware acceleration for the GPU.

Yeah , thats sad but true ...
Will it be possible to do the rendering stuff per Software , maybe with mesa etc... ?
Maybe some SPU's of the Cell Processor could be used as a GPU instead of the RSX ?

hmmm... :?:

Using threading, that's very possible. Hopefully the next kernel version will have more ps3 support. The changelog for it already lists a lot of ps3 added functionality and improved code.

Maybe that'd be possible, but it'd still be nowhere near as powerful as the dedicated GPU. And until Sony (or whoever) provides a way to work with (or around) the danged hypervisor (a software layer sitting between the hardware and the operating system), it's impossible to really use the GPU as it was intended.

I think, for now, the best way for 3D render... is to buy a USB VGA Card or a USB Monitor ... or wait for someone hack the hypervisor and free the RSX

I'm having a problem booting into Gentoo. I've lightly used Gentoo/Ubuntu before, but I've only installed it from live cds (which are really easy).

This is the guide I followed (and I followed it exactly!): http://ps3wiki.qj.net/index.php/Gentoo_Howto

I did everything it said, but now when it tries to boot into Gentoo, the first thing it says is:

/init: eval: 1: Gentoo: not found

Like I said, I followed the above guide EXACTLY, especially so that my kboot.conf and fstab were just like in the guide (aside from things next to #).

What do I need to do?

I finished the installation and I'm trying to work with the video modes. Here's what I've tried and the result:

YUV 60Hz 3:720p or RGB 60Hz 35:720p
Full screen is viewable, with a ~ 2" underscan on both sides and the top, no underscan on the bottom. If I start X and maximize a window it gets blown up to a bigger height than can fit on the screen so the bottom portion of the window is unusable.

RGB 60Hz 4:1080i or RGB 60Hz 36:1080i
Same result as above except without the large window problem. Maximizing a window in X sizes it to fit the viewable screen area.

Any of the above options with -f or +128
The screen seems to be the right size, but is shifted about 2" to the left (just enough so I can barely see the # in my root / # prompt. I think it's shifted down a little bit too.

Any suggestions? I hate having the underscan but also can't use it shifted off the TV by 2".

ETA on semiautomated /livecd install CD
when will be expecting this mystical creature to make his debut
don't need exact date maybe month could be good.

I'm getting a PS3 few days and i saw a video on http://youtube.com/watch?v=VPP2eVcsu2w looks nice and speedy i was wondering i may try to follow the wiki gentoo ps3 how-to my question is:
KDE installed separate or does the ISO included it meaning do you get dropped on KDE desktop after your done with the install, kde and gnone are mention on last few lines of code on first page so my guess is yes ?
Because on the (2nd page Gentoo - The next step) is where they throw in portage/emerge and gnone and kde appear again little confuse

I'm also wondering if emerge/Portage are available in nice GUI or is it only via terminal.

thanx 8)
