Edit: Duh, solved the first problem with emerging shadow again.
Anyhow, I'm still having the probklem with the "configuration error - unknown item 'FAILLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)" etc. when logging in, and etc-update only gives me: "Exiting: Nothing left to do; exiting. :)"

Quote:
First I had some problems with some text appearing when logging into something, and I read that etc-update and replace the files should do the job. Well, I didn't have any file to replace with (longer), and even worse, I've got like no confs in /etc/pam.d/ now. That means this is all I get when I issue su:
Code:
lapse@irminsul ~ $ su
su: Authentication failure
configuration error - unknown item 'FAILLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'LASTLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'MOTD_FILE' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'FTMP_FILE' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'ENV_ROOTPATH' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'PASS_MIN_LEN' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'CHFN_AUTH' (notify administrator)
Sorry.
lapse@irminsul ~ $

I don't get to enter the password.

And in the root one I've still got open, I get stuff like this:
Code:
root@irminsul /etc/pam.d $ passwd
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error

To me it looks like I'm in deep sh-t, but there must be some solution.
re-emerging pam-login and sys-libs/pam won't do much

I'm not sure I understand. etc-update won't work since it's saying there are no files to update, and dispatch-conf does nothing I know of. :o

You can probably remove the offending items.
