I can't seem to get it to work with wine, it installs fine but it can't find a suitable display when I run it.

With cedega 5.1, however, I installed it and no icon for GTA appeared. GTA2 installs fine, but if I play it the intro cutscenes play then it exits and all my windows have been scewed.

Has anyone had success with these games?

Isn't GTA a DOS game? Try DOSBox.

It had two versions - DOS and Windows.

If I remember correctly, I tried GTA 2 before with Cedega and it didn't work, Cedega wiki seems to confirm this.

However, the wiki says GTA 1 runs fine under Cedega, if you didn't get an icon, "cd" to where you installed the game, and run the command:
Code:
$ cedega game.exe

(Replace game.exe with the game's actual executable)

Ok I got GTA running in cedega, very surprisingly sluggish at 1024x768@32, but it still runs. As for GTA2.... There is no possible way to run it (and get at least 24 fps) in linux huh?

EDIT: So I've been trying to install with wine 0.9.9 and I get this error on installation:

Code:

Cannot install with wine 0.9,

error number: 0x80040706

Description: Object reference not set

Setup will now terminate

Also seen here:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=3132&iTestingId=40

So would I have to downgrade to an earlier version of wine to get GTA2 to work?

:D It works, I just installed it in vmware, then copied the directory into my wine c_drive. However I'm having some video problems. Windowed, or full screen, no matter the resolution, the game always displays at 640x480 fullscreen, but kicker still shows underneath it :x very annoying.

So I got to thinking.... Running twm in vt8, then running GTA2 in twm would definitely solve the problem, but that would be annoying... Still it's a nice temporary fix until I solve my main problem:

GTA2 doesn't play fullscreen OR windowed, it's sort of in-between since it always resizes my desktop to 640x480.
