Check if 'xfdesktop' is running, probably it died (check your $HOME/.xsession-errors for details). If it doesn't run, hit ALT-F2, and run it.
Edit: BTW it's a duplicate thread of this: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-429889-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-xfce+click.html
Always search, before ask.

Yes, a common Xfce4 problem. The only way to solve the problem is to delete your ~/.config and ~/.cache directories. You will need to redo your Xfce setup. Afterwords, make backups of .config and .cache so that the next time isn't quite so painful.

I also suggest upgrading to the ~arch or SVN versions. I have not experienced this problem since I upgraded.

BTW If I can recall correctly it's related to different (other than "en_US") language settings, so if you want to keep this version, you can try
Code:
LC_ALL=en_US xfdesktop

And if it resolves your problem you can edit yourxfce startup script to always start like this.

I do this:

Code:

killall nautilus
killall xfdesktop
gconftool-2 -s /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop -t bool false
xfdesktop &

and the problem is solved.
