I think it would be nice to play a game on one virtual desktop while the other virtual desktops still show the working area. Enemy-territory and other games can be run in window mode and those windows have the size of the screen. But how could one get them to be borderless and cover the whole screen ? ( This would also be useful for a virtual machine, e.g. vmware and there are probably even more use cases ). |

The window decorations (borders) are the responsibility of the window manager. Most popular WMs can be configured to show a window undecorated - it depends on the WM though where exactly this can be set up.
Also the application itself can set so-called "window manager hints", one of which is "don't decorate". Again it depends on the WM to support and honor these hints.
One popular app which does this is xmms because it has its own window-like widgets.
Management of virtual workspaces is also the responsibiltiy of the WM. Again, some support pinning a window to a specific workspace only.
This case is more complicated though, depending on the technology the game uses to implement fullscreen it might be impossible to force it into "windowed" mode. _________________ Please put [SOLVED] in your topic if you are a moron. |

Its not that wm dependant - Kaffeine and Totem and Epiphany can be switched to full window mode, no matter which wm you use ( it only needs to be fd.o compliant ). But how would one switch an app into this mode which doesn't support it nativeley. I suppose something like devilspie would be able to achieve it. But maybe there is some X tool that can set a window to the intended state via command line ? |
