PostPosted: Sat Mar 18, 2006 6:03 am    Post subject: XGL/Xorg crash (SOLVED) Reply with quote

I went through the process of upgrading to modular xorg. Then after some pain I got xgl working in gnome.
All the xgl extendsions worked; zoom, rotate, wobble, opacity, minimise.....and so on.

Firstly, I was just having instability problems. Xorg would just randomly lock up. Now, It crashes as soon as it loads to the desktop. It has a calcualtor and gconf up when it crashes (they must have been in the last running session).

I have tried logging in as a 'failsafe gnome' or 'failsafe terminal' session but the login manager usually crashes the same before I get to select it.

On top of this, when I go to change the login background it throws up another error about something not working and a problem with dgm glade interface. I re-merged glade but this did not help.

I have an ati X700 in my laptop.
Here is a copy of the last xorg.log

I have a X300 and experience the same lockup issue i found that by compiling the xorg with the option of VIDEO_CARDS="ati" (as opposed to "fglrx mesa" or "fglrx") it seems to lock up a whole lot less and become actually quite usable. Give that a go.

How do I re-merge Xorg? When I change VIDEO_CARDS variable in make.conf and run emerge, it doesn't do anything. So how do you force it to recompile?

Also, I have a few broken things in gnome. Even after emerging gedit again and some other apps. They still throw errors. How can I force it to re-merge gnome 2.12 as well. Does it matter what VIDEO_CARD variable I have when I recompile and merge gnome?

When I launch totem player I can see some libglib errors in a term. I've tried emerging glib but it didnt' help.

Cheers,

emerge xorg-x11 should work (or emerge xgl and you might want to do mesa as well).

AFAIK, gnome doesn't look at that variable.

I'm trying to perform a
Code:
revdep-rebuild
but am having many problems.

It found there were many broken links and libraries and started to go through re-=compiling and merging them. It however stopped on one saying glib wasn't properly installed. So I re-merged glib but no success.

I will provide revdep-rebuild output shortly.

Cheers

EDIT:

Result is not OK, you have following choices:
- if emerge failed during build, fix the problems and re-run revdep-rebuild
    or
- use -X or --package-names as first argument (try to rebuild package, not exact
  ebuild - ignores SLOT!)
    or
- set ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~<your platform>" and/or /etc/portage/package.unmask
(and remove /root/.revdep-rebuild.5_order to be evaluated again)
    or
- modify the above emerge command and run it manually
    or
- compile or unmerge unsatisfied packages manually, remove temporary files and
try again (you can edit package/ebuild list first)

To remove temporary files, please run:
rm /root/.revdep-rebuild*.?_*

Sorry about all the null characters. Do not know where they came from

I have since resolved this gtk problem by performing a revdep-build and manually going through recompiling all the packes with broken links.

I still however get a lot of complete freezes (including mouse and keyboard) when running in XGL. It requires a hard reboot. I welcome any suggestions

neophyte46 do you know of anyone who has a ATI card in the X series that has a non-freezing XGL?

I'm think of trying the open source drivers for XGL, nothing else works. Some people report success with the Xorg-x11 driver. I want to use XGL so bad. :(

I've updated my own topics but I thought I should do it here as well. My issue of freezing was resolved when I turned off mtrr in Xorg.

Yeah, I did that now and finally I *think* I have a purely stable Xgl & Compiz setup on my laptop with my x700. Hasn't crashed on my all day and I have even tried stretching videos around the cube and overlaying videos onto the desktop with mplayer. Still seems to work fine.

Just to some up for anyone else interested....
I turned mtrr off in my xorg config like m_spidey
I am on gentoo-2.6.14-r1 kernel
I have emerged ati-drviers-8.23.7 with at-extras
I patched my kernel to fix acpi errors and get battery/cpu info throttling.
I am launching Xgl via the gdm method and a compiz script in my gdm session.
I have the trans-inactive script load as well :)

Everything seems fully stable. At some point, I would like to create a spot on the gentoo wiki for our types of laptop (sonoma) that have PCI and ati cards. With information on how to setup wireless, Xgl, bluetooth, acpi stuff etc.

Anyway, i'll check back soon whenI have more time :)
