hi,
I'm running a PowerBook Pismo which is ATi, unfortunately ATi refuse to do a *nix driver for PPC so I've never tried fglrx. however i've never had any issues using the free driver (well, not like this anyway :))

have you tried using that?

Okay I've managed to get things working.

The only thing I can think of that would have caused the difference is that I changed the kernel configuration becuase of some error message I'd noticed at some point (can't remember where), but anyway...

Code:

Power management options (ACPI, APM) --->
[*]  Legacy Power Management API

You should definately make sure that frambuffer support isn't selected first of all, and then try installing fbsplash and gensplash if you want it after you've got the driver working (the http://gentoo-wiki.com/Ati indicates that using vesafb-tng has worked in the past).

This resolved my problems, as previously I had not been seeing any typed text in twm, and gnome and fluxbox both were hanging and X was locking up when they were started.

I guess this is to do with the fact that proprietry (Ati) drivers are not kept in sync with kernels where the Legacy Power Management API is deprecated.

OK Couple of things here.

Code:
# This loads the GLX module
#    Load       "glx"
# This loads the DRI module
#    Load       "dri"

# Section "DRI"
#    Mode 0666
# EndSection

Enable these

Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier  "** ATI Radeon (generic)               [radeon]"
    Driver      "radeon"
    #VideoRam    131072
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection

Driver should be "fglrx"

Make sure fglrx is loaded before you start X.
