PostPosted: Sat Mar 29, 2003 3:28 pm    Post subject: Gentoo on the Xbox Reply with quote

Hi, Ive managed to 100% sucessfully get Gentoo booting on my Xbox (From stage 1 compiled up to stage 3). Would anyone be interested in the release of this on xbox-linux.sf.net? Would anyone object?

Thanks for any feedback.

(No, this is definitely NOT a joke)

Very nice. :)

I don't have an Xbox myself but it's cool to see Gentoo on more platforms. And I don't see any reason to not post it to sourceforge.

Btw, what WM are using there? And were you able to get any full desktop environments to run (KDE/Gnome)?

I havent tried any other window managers due to lack of time!

Thats WindowMaker running right there ;)

I was thinkin about posting it to sourceforge but i wanna be sure on the legalities of it... does Gentoo allow me to do such things?

Also, when I upload, my ISP tends to corrupt my data so id probably need to get someone else to do it for me.

Gentoo is GPL so as long as you make sure that the source is accessible (which it will be since you're using Gentoo), I'm pretty sure it would be legal.

Cool. Yeah, im not holding anything back... nor have I actually changed/ defaced anything. All I've really done is added

Code:
echo "WELCOME to Gentoox ported to Xbox by ShALLaX"

to /etc/conf.d/local.start

and I've given the Gentoo team complete credit for the distro :D.... So ill try and get it released on sourceforge :D

Well, I'm waiting for Gentoox.sf.net !

Will you do pre-compiled packages ? It'll be a very nice idea ;). We could help with this whenever we install "Gentoox".

I've recently read in slashdot that you can use linux without a modchip, but you need:
- Original game "007 Agent Under Fire"
- A memory card/memorystick + converter usb <-> modified xbox usb
- A computer ( )
The information given in
http://www.xbox-scene.com/,
http://www.xboxhacker.net/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=12&t=10520,
or
http://slashdot.org/articles/03/03/30/1337234.shtml?tid=106

Have a nice day !

Grrr, i have to apologise for the lack of pictures, my server got nuked during a powercut so Im having to reinstall Gentoo on it :(. The pics should be up within 24 hours. Sorry people.

As for xbox-scene... it took me a while to get them to post the news because they wanted to see pics as proof... which wasnt possible since my server was down, but i got there in the end :D.

Im doin some final testing/ tweeking. I fixed some compile probs (changed the compiler flags) and managed to get irssi compiled :). CD ripping works great heheheh :D. Ill keep you updated...

Oooh almost forgot! Precompiled packages would be nice but as it stands, the stage3 rootfs when compressed takes up ~550MB. I dont really wanna go any bigger than this because people dont wanna spend ages downloading large files.

Getting your Xbox on a network is a simple as plugging in a cable from your xbox to a router, it assigns an IP by DHCP automatically at boot up. Also, emerging stuff works just fine.

I think its best to leave it in a pure stage3 so people can customise it later because things like xfree need some hacking to get working properly, as of now these hacks are being continually updated so if I included them with this distro it would be obsolete upon release and may make upgrading to newer hacks harder.

One thing I have included is the kernel source and configuration used to get it to boot (I left this in the image so people can mess around with it to try and tweek performance etc...).

So, this will only be released as a clean stage3 system.

Ok guys, I think its all ready for release. After fixing a major bug (swap not being mounted) and running some compilation tests, from what I'm seeing, everything runs perfectly!

Now Im gonna search for hosting... possibly on sf.net

have you looked into reporting this to the owner of lindows? supposedly he was having some contest that would pay big bucks (i think like $200k) to get linux going on the Xbox

ps- if so i want a 10% finders fee!

That money goes to these people, quite rightfully so... 8)

EDIT: Sorry, just checked again. Half of the prize money goes to whoever makes Linux bootable on unmodified Xboxes.

It just seems theres always someone out there trying to steal my limelight ;). The one thing you didnt do was make it public and up for release :D

Shallax,

If you're still looking for hosting for gentooX, email me and we'll see if we can get you going over at www.hardcoretek.com. Hardcoretek is a dual OC3 connection game/web server run by gentoo lovers. I've spoken with the site's owner and he's willing to host the files for you.

Hey !

I see this is gooing to be up in a bit time. I suggest to have a list of precompiled packages apart, not in the main cd. And I suggest to add in the cd emulators such as epsxe and emupen.

See you!

hey i don't want to steal your limelight ;-) and i just posted a note in one of the few xbox on gentoo threads here

And although I agree that gentoo is the best distro out there (of course *g*), I don't think a repository of precompiled packages makes much sense. There is already a debian repository and the main advantage of gentoo are the use flags, which you can't consider in that repository.

And btw: I wasn't the first who had gentoo on the xbox. Ed from the xbox-linux team was the first one :)

Hello !

I did read all the forum, but don't see if i have to modify the Xbox to see gentoo boot on it ...

It will be cool if no modification to xbox are required to install gentoo.

Thanks for info.

gimp and openoffice run fine, it is possible to upgrade your harddisk, but the mod chip must support that. The USB port is pretty standard, only the connector is different. There's a short howto on xbox-linux.sourceforge.net
Upgrading the RAM is really difficult, you would need to solder a specific kind of ram chips onto the free spots on the mainboard. It can be done, but it's really not practical.

I can't actually help you about the mod chip, but look for shops that sell console accessoires.
