Hello all. Been trying to get opensource ati drivers to work on my laptop (ATI X600)
So far, so good. Been using the ebuilds from the xgl-coffee overlay, Rev 90
I have emerged the following:

x11-drivers/x11-video-ati
x11-base/x11-drm
media-libs/mesa

ati is in my VIDEO_CARDS

glxinfo | grep dire: direct rendering: Yes :):)

However:

glxgears pops up a window that instantly disappears, leaving:

Code:
*********************************WARN_ONCE*********************************
File r300_ioctl.c function r300Clear line 555
CB_DPATH has been enabled.
Please let me know if this introduces new instabilities.
***************************************************************************

I will be trying to emerge xgl shortly, as well as trying to get it running on both ati proprietary drivers as well as opensource drivers.
Could anyone tell me what the above means? I take it that glxgears not working is not a good thing. Thanks!

I will try out the mesa-cvs if possible. can anybody tell me if the mesa ebuild in xgl-coffee overlay is using mesa-cvs?[/code]

I followed the instructions here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-374745-highlight-xf86videoati.html

Same problem, same error. The same section about the 3d mesa driver not being provided appears in Xorg.0.log.

I am re-trying the ebuilds from the xgl-coffee overlay. From what I see the ebuilds basically automate the instructions in the guide linked above. Checkout CVS from freedesktop.org, compile, install. I have emerged "x11-drm" and am now re-emerging "mesa". Sorry for turning this thread into a blog, just trying to document what I'm doing so that maybe somebody can figure out if it's a problem with my configuration, or if the free drivers simply aren't stable on this vid card.

In any case, even with the glxgears not working, 2d more or less works. however, if i startx into gnome and then log out, the whole shebang locks up with a black-white flashing screen.

Last update- I now get the flashing screen upon trying to load x.org. I've run out of time for today so I'm switching back to fglrx. Xgl works with fglrx (more or less). Random lockups. Was hoping to get the free driver working stably.

The warnings you show are just that, warnings. I get them and glxgears works correctly but only for the stable mesa in portage. Any of the cvs mesa breaks glxgears for me.

I've tried reinstalling everything. First:

emerge -Ca mesa xgl compiz xf86-video-ati libdrm x11-drm

Then reinstall

emerge -av libdrm x11-drm mesa xf86-video-ati

Like that, xorg7.0 loads up, gnome works, reports "direct rendering:yes" but glxgears does not work. upon trying to log out, i get flashing black/white screen.

Tried to emerge -Ca mesa, then disable the xgl-coffee overlay and went for mesa-6.4.2. That results in flashing black/white screen upon attempting to load X.

In summary, haven't been able to get free drivers for x600 to work. Still willing to try any suggestions out. Thanks!

The newer drivers do not work with old Mesa (at least in my experience). If you use Mesa 6.4.2, you need the older drivers.

The ebuild for ATI (and even the Intel i810 driver) in the overlay will only work with new Mesa + x11-lib + libdrm + xorg-server all in the overlay.

Caveat: I get my Intel 855GME working with X, and glxgears/info works, though I get lower FPS (~200). I also get errors about unsupported visuals. Also, Xgl + compiz + kde/gnome crashes somewhere after loading gnome-window-decorator or gnome/kde. If I revert back to original xf86-video-i810 and copy back my Mesa i915_dri.so from 6.4.2 to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ (leaving Mesa 6.5.0 installed), I can get everything working, including Xgl + compiz + gnome/kde. It's just with the old driver.

So, your mileage may vary. The new cvs drivers are still a work in progress and seem to be the most unstable part of this whole Xgl experiment.

:)

I tried using all the ebuilds from the overlay. More specifically:

mesa
libdrm
x11-drm
xf86-video-ati
xorg-server

IIR they are all basically CVS ebuilds. End result: does not work.
Everything compiles and 2D acceleration works, but direct rendering simply doesn't. Clearly the cvs xorg-server is still pretty buggy too. Free ati drivers give me a black-white flashing screen lockup. Trying the CVS xorg-server with fglrx results in kernel panic upon invoking "glxinfo". Hard to say exactly where the bug that causes this resides, may just be an interaction between unstable xorg-server and unstable fglrx. Hope ati improves their driver soon, I'd sure like to use xgl+compiz on my laptop like i do on my nv-based desktop.

One thing I'm not 100% clear about is the inter-relation between packages. I suspect that the order they are compiled in matters, as they use bits" from each other. I'm also not sure if things like eselect opengl set need to be done in between certain packages. Would appreciate any suggestions in this respect: i'd be willing to try them out. Otherwise i'm considering this as "code not stable yet" and i'll probably revisit it in a month or so.
