|

Hey! So, I just installed Gentoo on my Dell Latitude C600 laptop, and everything is going well, except for the size of my console. As long as I'm not in X (where it can load my drivers), my console only takes up maybe a third of my laptop screen. I know that I compiled the correct video drivers into the kernel, so is there a config file somewhere that I'm missing? or do I need to recompile my kernel with some other features built in? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The splashutils package provides a framebuffer console which is useful for controlling the resolution (and background image) in the virtual consoles. You will need to read the instructions (or howtos) to get it to work and there are kernel options you will need to adjust so a kernel re-compile is probably going to be required. It can be a little tricky to set up but the effect is well worth the effort IMO. I have a different background image set on each vconsole which makes it very easy to keep them distinguished in my head.
On my Dell laptop the Fn-F5 and Fn-F7 keys have an effect on that "tiny screen" effect. Also dual booting into Windows can change the mode as well. I think the mode is saved in the BIOS so once it gets set correctly, the setting will be remembered across reboots. Your key layout may be different. Look for the blue text on bottom of the function keys. I think the one labeled "font" is the one you want. Hitting those keys while X is running might make your laptop very unhappy. Best to only play around with no X. Again, once you get to the correct mode, you probably won't have to do it again unless you do something silly like run Windows |

You saved my day man, was trying to figure out all day how it could run starcraft without those black bars. |
