I get the following error every time I start my kde:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
When i try to change settings in control center to ALSA i get this:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such device)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
My whole system is installed from Gentoo Live CD 2006, and I refused to use internet connection. At the moment i don't even know whether my drivers for SB Live are already installed or not. I couldn't find any .config file. The one i made (make xconfig, save as...) doesn't have those drivers that I need (but maybe my kernel has it's own config and xconfig makes default .config when it doesn't find any). Anyway, my kernel is supposed to be 'kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.15-gentoo-r5'. I tried to recompile it with my .config (adding required drivers of course) but system doesn't work with this kernel... tried to compile kernel-2.6.16 but it also doesn't work. Now i see that i have no idea how to compile kernel but generally i'd like to make audio work. I tried to install alsa-driver with emerge, but it appeared, that kernel already has it.
Could anyone help (maybe if it is only the matter of kernel proper compilation could You tell me how to do it - on GRUB)? |

The Gentoo ALSA Guide shows you how to do this step-by-step. _________________ The free market gave me gonorrhea. |

Finally i've coped with this. Thanks 4 link. I just had to compile my kernel once again (don't know why), and it works. But still there is a little problem. Sound is not clean. There are crashes and other annoying sounds. It is not that sound which we can hear speakers can't cope with the volume (but of course making PCM in alsa mixer to 100 it is clipping as hell).
Got some idea what is it and what 2 do? |

Could be that your sound device isn't very well support by ALSA - more likely if it's an onboard chip. Do you know what the sound device is? If it's a PCI sound card, lspci will tell you. |

impossible that it's not compatible - Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 0. Maybe it is in conflict with the onboard audio - VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller. I've set alsa to SB under alsaconf. The onboard audio is useless for me, maybe I should disable it somehow? |
