|
|
Hi all!
I'm trying to install my first Gentoo on a Fujitsu-Siemens Scenic L 866MHz.
The video card is an integrated chipset from Intel (Intel(R) 82815 Graphics Controller).
When trying to boot from thje LiveCD, everything seems to go fine until I have the liveCD root# prompt. Then my monitor shuts down and says that the cable is not connected...
I've put the agpgart option on boot but nothing changed...
Any idea of the source of this problem? |

Hi and welcome to the forums.
Are you sure that the term isn't just blank or the screen isn't just "sleeping"? If you press any key do you get the "screen" back?
If so, run the following command:
If that doesn't work try instead
Code: | # setterm -powersave off |

I think what he means is that the monitor doesn't get a signal when the command prompt comes up. |

In that case and assuming it's a problem with the framebuffer, try using gentoo-nofb. _________________ Jorge.

Thanks for your answers. I'll try the -nofb option. In fact my screen OSD displays sometimes "no received signal". |

I tried with gentoo-nofb but nothing changed... I'll try with another monitor but don't think it will change anything... |

how far does this actually get? Do you see graphics and a loading bar.. possibly a message that says 'press <key> for verbose mode'?
If that's the case then it's possible the livecd isn't configuring X properly and the resolution it's trying to display is out of range for your monitor. Once the screen goes black, try pressing 'ctrl+alt+numpad plus' (or numpad minus) a few times. If X is loaded this will tell it to cycle through possible resolutions. |

Hello people,
I'm experiencing the exact same thing. I tried using -nofb and, after the setup affirming to me that it was detecting my hardware appropriately, the monitor shuts off. The last thing I see is #root. I tried using ctrl-alt-numpad + / - but there was no change.
Somehow I imagine that my monitor isn't the issue (it's a stock-standard NEC 17inch monitor which gentoo seems to detect correctly), though when I get the chance I will try another monitor.
So I am thinking it is hardware. Perhaps incompatibility with the MB? I'm using a 5 year old Gigabyte ga-7vtx which is AMD (using AMD Athlon XP 1.47Ghz). Perhaps a bios setting? I plan to play around with these to see if anything changes (perhaps some of the AGP settings?). The Gigabyte board uses the AMIbios.
I'm using the live gentoo 2006.0 cd to boot.
Thank you for any assistance.

oops. Forgot to mention above that I am using an msi Geforce FX 5600 with myvivo. Though I can't imagine why there would be any issues with this card. It's old now and gentoo correctly identifies it. |

Same happened to me. The monitor would go into a sleep like mode after the kernel booted and I got the "livecd root#" prompt. During the bootup I noticed an error that said my video card doesnt have opengl support. I tried the -nofb option and it booted into gnome but still complained about opengl. |

Perhaps everyone having the same issue can post their relevant machine specs (I'm using dxdiag in win xp) and then we may see some common element that may be the cause of the problem... my specs are as follows:

And for any experienced Gentoo people out there... please help us! :0)

If this is preventing you from installing gentoo, then you should use the text installer. Just boot the kernel with the "nox" option then run "installer" from the command line. This isn't a solution to the graphical problem though.
The computer that gave me problems is old and off the top of my head:
PII 350 Mhz
256 MB
Intel i740 Graphics Card
Award Bios
Generic CRT Monitor |

In my case, the problem was my monitor was not working with the hsync and vsync assigned on xorg.conf. I got back to console1 (Ctrl + Alt + F1) then made a xorgconfig command. On the end of the process, that wrote a new xorg.conf file, then a got back to console7 (Ctrl + Alt + F7) and restarted this with Ctrl + Alt + Backspace. |
